This fierce fellow has risen to the challenge! This is 7 of Wands from the upcoming 78 Tarot Masters Medieval deck (2025). I'm one of 10 artists creating 8 cards for this deck. I'm excited to start revealing them here!
The painting is 6x10 inches, created with ink, watercolor, and acryla gouache.

I'll be taking part in the next 78 Tarot project, Nautical the New Wave. They've selected an older, favorite painting of mine for the oracle deck. I'm pleased to contribute to another one of their decks!

A few ways. I ran an artist collective on fb for a bit and acquired a few collectors from that. Some of them watch for my originals on social media when I post them.
I also take part in a few exhibitions per year through some online galleries.

Selling art is hard.
I've been growing sales year after year (slowly). The income is a combination of online product sales (stickers, pins, patches), convention sales, original art sales and some freelance work for ttrpgs.

"the witch", 16x20 cut paper, acrylic, oils. More old stuff because I feel like it and because my next tarot card is taking much longer than I first thought. This is for a South Korean movie "The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion", highly recommend.

I hear you. Scale is something that I'm constantly adjusting and wrangling.
I know people who are really comfortable working smaller. I always feel like my work looks too blobby if I get it too small.
Which is to say, you should work at whatever scale works best for you.

Thanks!
I have a hard time working small.
I just start large and use larger brushes in the earlier stages. And since these are printed as smaller interior illustrations, I don’t go crazy with background detail.

They are all on paper that is 12" x 16" or less. Since that's the largest I can fit through my printer. :)

They all had their own ratios depending on where they were being placed within the book. I had a meeting ahead of time to get all of those details.

Read the OP. I agree with the post.
I often see a lot of rhetoric in artist circles, though - pushing to only lean into the weird shit that feels authentic to yourself. And I think from a biz standpoint, that only works if the weird shit you like also has mass appeal.

As folklore reminds us, the border between any two things is a traditional place of enchantment: the bridge between two river banks, the wall between the woodlands and the hills, and those interstitial realms where cultures, landscapes, languages, art forms and genres meet.

I've got bills to pay, so I try to manage a balance of work that I know has mass appeal and some that is pushing the boundaries a bit.

Miyazaki can do what he does, because he's Miyazaki and already beloved.
Work I've felt was really me had totally flopped on social media. While work that has fed into more mass appeal has done better.

Folks, I know I don't post here much, just can't keep up with the socials! Meta is down, so I need to reach as many eyeballs as possible as that (foolishly perhaps) was my best reaching platform, as well as insta. www.kickstarter.com/projects/jas... #dnd5e #ttrpg #crowdfunding #watercolour

I have been super bad about posting work to social media lately. So, no surprise that it mostly got missed by people the first time.
And thank you! Lovely to see you here. 😊
