(If you're in Baltimore and don't know about The Book Thing: it's a nonprofit used book free distribution system. A major fire fucked them up for a long time, but they're getting back on their feet and are open one day a month again! bookthing.org )

in 2019 my friend was like “i got this amazing book from the book thing to cut up for collage.” i looked at it and said “this is a rare charley harper illustrated book!” it was worth $$$ (can’t resell book thing books). it turned out her grandfather had written the foreword!! viva la book thing

Whoa. Almost two decades ago I helped run a "Book Thing" here in Greater Boston, and for a minute I thought the Baltimore project must be a continuation of it. But looking back at the website I created for the local founder, I see she was basing her work on the Baltimore Book Thing!
