I think the most important *filmmaker* is probably still his buddy Spielberg. I'd regard Lucas as a generationally important cinema entrepreneur - ILM, Pixar, Skywalker Sound, LucasArts - as important as the film moguls he copped ideas from if not more so, but as much a filmmaker as Sam Goldwyn.

I think that's basically fine, from the point of view of the *art*, but potentially not from the point of view of the balkanized audience. We like being able to enjoy things with other people! Losing that is deeply destabilizing! We're all trying to figure out how to live in the 1000 True Fans era.

I think "death of culture" is about the fact that "art" is never just about the work – it's about the work and the audience it attracts. Fandom blends the two; the fragmentation of monoculture underscores the gap. If an artist creates something for a niche that is airgapped from other niches...

He's basically country music's equivalent of Richard Hell, a Jewish iconoclast who did some genuinely groundbreaking stuff in the 1970s, who gave great interview, who transitioned from music to writing, and whose influence can be seen through his famous collaborators and contemporaries.

Beyond my glib reaction to his death: I've listened to a couple of his albums, read a couple of his novels, smoked one of his cigars, seen him in concert, and interviewed him. He did some good stuff, but a long while ago figured out how to take it easy, and spent decades churning out rewarmed stuff.

I have a lot of time for the polar opposite: it's really cool to learn about regional differences in ubiquitous food. We had a branch of a St. Louis-based pizzeria, Pi, here in DC. AFAIK they didn't serve "St. Louis-style pizza" - no Provel - but they were _great_. (They *did* have deep dish, fwiw.)
