The German government launched a carbon offsetting programme in 2018.
It's paid for by drivers when they fill their cars with petrol.
Turns out that several of the projects in China are fake.
Several others just don't exist.

A new report by Follow the Money exposes the accounting tricks and dodgy carbon offsets behind Gucci's sustainability claims.
None of which really came as a surprise to me.
More surprising is that anyone would pay $4,800 for a Gucci handbag.

This carbon credit tree planting project in Sierra Leone started two years ago.
Local communities have not given their free, prior informed consent for tree planting on their land.

Ricardo Stoppe is Brazil's largest seller of carbon credits. He's alleged to be the leader of a criminal organisation.
Federal Police have launched "Operation Greenwashing" to stop the criminals.
Several REDD projects, certified by Verra, are involved.

The US government recently announced a non-legally binding, voluntary set of "principles" for carbon markets.
This was widely reported as a set of guidelines to "regulate" the VCM.
It's nothing of the sort - this amounts to nothing more than a wish list.

Now they stand accused of paying people to come forward. "This is a baseless claim," SOMO and KHRC state.

Thanks - I think we agree. IKEA's monocultures in New Zealand are "insetting", not "offsetting". That means the carbon credits won't be sold on carbon markets. That also means there will be no external auditing process (flawed as that is!). So IKEA can do whatever they want with the timber.
