I read Barbara Kingsolver's Demon Copperhead, which won the 2023 Pulizer Prize for fiction. It touches on some of these cultural issues, generally in the context of the opioid crisis. It's given me some understanding about how things got the way they are.

Now that California law allows ADUs despite prohibitive local statutes, tons of house-rich people are adding rental living space to their homes. Houses in my area go from 1-2 million, and the waiting list for contractors is the only thing slowing change. It's not all NIMBY. Lower rates would help.

It probably depends on what you like to do. Meds really help with linear thinking in order to complete tasks. If your interests aren't incredibly diverse and you don't enjoy constant stimulation, I can definitely see wanting a permanent fix. I personally like the constant discovery that ADHD brings.
