It was about the same time for me. But i think it was working for the government, where I saw a lot of the sclerosis and lack of state capacity that I had experienced in the former USSR, that did it for me. Close second was working on counterinsurgency and trying to find ways to communicate... 1/2

The government suddenly wanting to support health education would be amazing. Sadly, the biggest push for workforce funding is not for doctors. At least in dentistry, it's lucrative to practice in rural areas, but not in public health.

I'm pretty grim on it in rural areas in general. I advised a patient to take what they can get with appointment availability. Waiting long periods is the norm.

I just found out that we're back to two year waiting lists for medicaid dental appointments in my county. Oregon is so slowly working on the fix for this that I don't know there's going to be any way to rebuild the provider network.
