This is from a year ago, I used to spend a lot of humid summer afternoons and nights loitering around in the derelict areas of the countryside and Exeter listening to music. I still haven't processed how I went from the hopeless situation I was in then to the places I'm going now, in a single year.

The question is whether the electorate masses would actually stick to their criticisms and back a young candidate over Trump without question, or would they simply move the goalposts. It's a gamble.

I understand both sides. It's a MUST WIN election, unfortunately somehow more so than the last two, so making any decision is tense. Conventional wisdom is the incumbent would have a better chance. Switching this late of course has some risk. But all people seem to be begging for a young candidate.

True, its contents are often misunderstood and its importance overestimated, but it is still significant as the first example of law that explicitly did apply to the head of state, hence it often being cited as inspiration for much of Enlightenment thought and, of course, the American Revolution

It can feel like democratic backsliding is irreversible, that these decisions will endure even if autocracy is narrowly avoided later this year, but the Civil War and abolishment of slavery came only after decades of institutional oppression, civil rights after decades of segregation.

I mean this is going so far back it's less in the ballpark of lawyers and now familiar area only to the early intellectuals of liberalism during the Enlightenment who had to contend with monarchy We have to now, 300 years later, seriously fight for rule of law again. 800 years since Magna Carta.

So what you describe the Yinglets doing, I would go so far as to say it would be morally questionable for humans to do it for real, but it's not really very sensible to call it eugenics. It's actually more or less what many, many animals do in nature.

The key thing about defining eugenics is that it believes in the *inherent* superiority of certain qualities. It all stems from that unhelpfully misleading phrase, "survival of the fittest". "Fitness" isn't inherent in biology, it's a result of the current state of very dynamic selection pressures..

I just call myself a "progressive" now and leave it at that. Obviously I still give the benefit of the doubt to people, but sadly I feel I need to be a lot more skeptical of self-labelled communists and the radical, revolutionary sort of people.

I stopped feeling comfortable calling myself a "socialist" after Russia invaded Ukraine and I saw the pro-authoritarian reactions from some socialists. Especially so after some very bad experiences with bigotry and hate coming from fellow leftists uncritically weaponizing progressive-sounding words.
