(Not to mention it's like jumping from reading a precocious twelfth grader's stories to the absolute genius, comedic, empathetic, prose of a master.)

Replace your Hogwarts house with your subseries... are you the Unseen University, the Ankh-Morpork Guards, Death, or the Witches? If you answer Moist Von Lipwig, I will immediately check my wallet. It is a reflex I cannot help.

I bet it would take less than a week to retheme Universal's Harry Potter Land to Ankh-Morpork. Just change some signs and add Hippos to the bridge.

… to treat people like humans… or dwarves, or trolls, or werewolves, or vampires, or… anything else.

I got into Pratchett before Hairy Potter was a thing. HP felt lesser as a book even then. Something I'd already out grown. I'm begging HP fans to read more books. Especially Discworld. Best thing about it is you can pretty much jump in anywhere.

My favourites were the Guards/ Vimes series. Best lessons in human nature, words still with me, what, 30 years later?

Younger readers might want to start with The Wee Free Men, who are also hilarious to adults.

This! I found the discworld a little late, but wow I am deeply madly in love with these books. More Pratchett is always a wonderful thing. Potter also sucks ass when compared to Vimes, Rincewind, or god help us all Nanny Ogg!

I think the trick is to find the right book since they all hit so differently. I'm quite partial to Small Gods myself but anything Rincewind is gonna be a ride.

It has Death. And He's really quite a pleasant fellow fascinated by humans. And he's a cat person

Pratchett did even better than that. He managed to treat humans like people.

Which is a good recommendation to start? Mine was the Hogfather story. Especially the movie with Baldrick in it

What book should I start with? No one ever gave me an answer to that beyond "Not the first one, tho" and everybody else gave conflicting ideas...

I want to echo and emphasize the Diane Wynn’s-Jones which are smart and written for a young audience. Much as I love Pratchett, they are grown up books.

Not only are there 41 of these books, 5 of them are Tiffany Aching novels that should be in the hands of any young reader looking for a book about a young person learning about magic.
