the 5-4 pre-2016 court equilibrium was actually quite bad! it made many terrible decisions (Bush v Gore, anyone?) 2016 was the one chance Dems had to flip it 5-4 the other way, and it could have been transformative as much as Hillary otherwise sucked but nobody cared enough and now we're fucked

I'm a former death penalty lawyer. In 2016, we (me and my colleagues) were hoping for a future that had no death penalty because of SCOTUS, even though Hillary was...not great. After the election, we knew we'd never live long enough to see it get abolished. It was crushing.
