I moved to Richmond, VA, from Chicago, saw Monument Avenue, block after block of statues to Civil War military. It dawned on me it was the largest trophy ever awarded to a second place team.

I had a friend who was angry about Confederate statues & monuments coming down. I didn't understand why he would celebrate failure and still need to see self-given participation trophies erected to intimidate minorities. "Do you cheer when your football team loses too?" We aren't friends anymore.

Through my childhood, on election nights, my dad was the man under Peter Snow’s desk putting interesting facts on notecards into his socks. That’s how it was done before Google, kids. You got a very clever ASD man with some Oxford degrees to just remember interesting constituency histories.
