there is another aspect to all of this, which is hard to admit, and it is this: Donald Trump is a much stronger candidate for office than people give him credit for he has survived scandal that would destroy anyone else irregular voters in electorally important areas come out to vote for him only

Unfortunately, there have been a lot of people in my life who I am sure would have (or did) follow him anywhere after he made the “Mexicans are rapists” comment because they aren’t “allowed” to say it (narrator: they would say things like that all the time).

Candidates can seem strong before becoming a nominee or time in office too. Hell, at one point Mark Zuckerberg polled pretty well.

i mean, despite not actually being a good businessman, in fact a horrifically bad one, he was on the tv being treated as if he was the best, strongest, most dominant businessman in the entire world. people are still giving him credit for that

Corollary: If you (like me) say "Trump has zero appeal to me", then you need to recognize that you are atypical, and so your instincts about "what will appeal to the median voter" are likely to be off.

You say stronger candidate. I say catalyst for the worst members of American society being enabled and empowered.

Are we underestimating Donald Trump or overestimating the American electorate?

Reality TV created some weird parasocial relationships over the years. Trump is benefiting from both that and his actual talent to ad lib in a way that doesn't leave that crowd disillusioned. Streamer/youtuber politicians will probably also grab some irregular voters in hard to predict locations.

I had the Trump board game growing up. It’s pretty well designed. He was on TV as the designated rich business genius for decades. McDonalds did ads with him. The Apprentice ran how many seasons. There are decades and millions spent on telling people Trump is a genius leader.

he inspires a depth of devotion rarely seen in politics it is baffling and horrifying on every level, but “anyone should be able to trivially beat this fucker, why can’t they” is simply not true

Which is absolutely insane to think about. Is this who America really is?

I think that was true in 2016 but not true now. In 2016 I hated the man, but when he gave out Lindsey Graham's personal cell phone number at a rally during the Repub primaries, I genuinely belly laughed. And then I was scared, because that was when I thought he could pull it off.

2020 at the polls was weird because you have to provide ballot help & you’re not supposed to see but you often accidentally do & the most unlikely folks needed ballot help for just one vote & that vote was trump. and i’d want to say, “he hates you. you get that, right?” but i would never & didn’t.
