Vetinari is one of my favorite characters for a reason, and that reason is that he does not try to crush the instincts of his city
he simply finds the pressure point and applies the necessary force
I also love this quote as an example of Terry's complex love for the general citizenry, even tho, and maybe even partially because the general citizenry can be pretty terrible. Look at these adorable humans being awful in new and innovative and small ways!
I remember the printing press one, I forget what it's called, him showing up, looking the place over, and saying something to the effect of "go ahead, but I'm holding you personally responsible for keeping this firmly in the bounds of the cult, the canny and the cane."
I agree. I also often think that Vetinari, Vimes, Granny, Tiffany and Moist were the characters that TP spent the most time developing when discworld became a real place and not just a vehicle for isolated satirical bits (pyramids/moving pictures etc.).
yes - Terry’s books were full of a deep understanding of all the ways humanity can be venal and terrible and opportunistic and a love for humanity that transcended that
I have a theory that he lives his city as one loves a child
You don't want to stop your kid from painting altogether you just want to direct them away from the walls
