Dorothy Chan is a poet and academic and her work fizzes off the page in this poem. The tripe sonnet 'Because boy you're starstruck and I'm a wonder'

Which is an absolutely banging title, straight off!

I made another video with Newstead Abbey where I deep dive into one of the objects in their archive. This time I'm looking at... a tree. But not just any tree... it forms part of a much bigger (and more scandalous) story!

Edna St Vinent Millay was a bisexual American poet writing predominantly in the first half of the 20th century. I love a lot of her uses of the sonnet form but my favourite poem has always been 'What lips my lips have kissed...'

I've already included this author in the list but there's nothing to say I can't include someone twice. I was in the Nottingham Central Library on Monday browsing and this poem, one of my favourites, leapt out at me right when I needed it.

I'm sorry I've fallen a bit behind on this. It's been a bit of a difficult week. I'll make sure to catch up by the weekend but here's a long one to keep you going!

I confess to having been guilty of overlooking Anne Brontë but after Sam's talk and reading Anne's poems for bookgroup I cannot wait to dive into more of Anne's work!

I recommend reading more of Andrew McMillan's poetry. It so often has a compressed energy which is almost unbearably powerful in the reading.

Today's read is this short one - 'Praise Poem'

One of my favourite poetry collections of recent years was Fatimah Asghar's 'If They Come For Us'.

You can find some of the poems online from the collection. 'If They Should Come For Us' always strikes me as particularly stunning

I always enjoy Hailey Piper stories. I mostly read her horror but this is more... wild west meets robotics meets romance so... enjoy! 'The Heart is a Spare Part'

I found Sarah Gailey through their novellas but have enjoyed their work across lots of different forms. This short story is a fun, if dark, tale of predatory merfolk

Jackie Kay has written across multiple genres - life-writing, fiction and poetry. I love this short poem 'Her' and you can hear the poet reading it as well as read it here

I've shared this story before but it's worth sharing in a new context. 'Manor' is a gay vampire story from 1885 written by Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, an early gay activist/writer

I absolutely love this story by Nibedita Sen and have used it in my teaching a load of times. The story gives more with every rereading:

June 3rd

June 3rd Lord Byron's 'To Thyrza'. This poem is one of a number poems Byron wrote after the death of his 'more than friend' John Edleston. Queer grief and loss, but also remembrance and celebration of a fragile beautiful thing.

I'm doing a little daily #queer read for #pride. A short story of poem (or a few poems!)

I'm not being very organised in picking things out, just stuff I love from different places and times.

I hope you enjoy!
