They turned the a3 into a $65k car by making it a plug in hybrid. It didn’t get most of the tech of the higher trim cars, but it had nice seats and could do a little electric around town. Probably helped satisfy a fleet requirement and introduced EV before the full e-trons came out.

LoL, yeah, if you look into shit like the Nissan Leaf and why it sucks as an EV (had no active thermal management system for the battery), and yet it's been around for so long ... It's a compliance car. Either for California, or just to meet fleet-scale MPG requirements.
