Obviously there are scenarios where Biden is unelectable. But when “convicted felon and rapist who tried to overturn an election” is electable, why attempt the first post-primaries switch on an unwilling President?

“No matter what other facts might emerge” is very straw man. Biden is old; he’s also an incumbent with, overall, a strong record. Forcing him out would signal panic; not promoting Harris would show misogyny/racism; introducing a new candidate nationally is risky. The consensus is pragmatism.

They turned the a3 into a $65k car by making it a plug in hybrid. It didn’t get most of the tech of the higher trim cars, but it had nice seats and could do a little electric around town. Probably helped satisfy a fleet requirement and introduced EV before the full e-trons came out.

I was getting 35-40 miles per charge and recommended the Volt to a friend who got the Gen2. I was so jealous!

The infrastructure bill was/is supposed to boost charging infrastructure, but in my experience the plug-in hybrid is the best way to scale EVs for the most driving profiles (and requires less rare metal per vehicle bc the batteries are smaller.)

Went to an e-tron after but the EV range was useless (~12 miles) and it wasn’t programmed to usefully regen off the brakes. Got a Tesla, reluctantly, bc of the charging network. Couldn’t have traveled as much with another brand but still spent too much time plotting charging sessions.

I had a 1st gen Volt, and if you put better seats in it (I know, more weight) it might be my favorite car. Spent <$200/year on gas bc most of my driving was in the city, but I had no range anxiety about longer weekend trips. Engine came on once to make sure the gas didn’t spoil.

You naive fool! Trump’s eyes were merely hooded, to confuse his enemies. His body was coiled like a snake; he could have struck at any moment. How many tournaments at his own golf club must he claim to have won before you will accept that he is Heracles reborn?

I regularly think about how Erdoğan met with Trump and right afterwards sicced his guards on peaceful protestors on US soil knowing that the US President would have no objection, and how it was a little public demonstration of the authoritarian alignment project.

How about “Biden is an imperfect lead singer for a band I’d rather hear? I don’t love *all* their songs, but they’ve got a couple of bangers and they sound way better than the Nazi marching band.”

The alternative is to take your ball and go home, like Ralph Nader did, and allow the candidate furthest from your constituency to win. Which doesn’t seem like good leadership to me 🤷🏻♂️

If you’re a more progressive candidate, your job is to build as much support as possible to give to the more electable centrist in exchange for getting some of your stuff into the platform. Biden‘s not doing student debt relief without Sanders and Warren (I voted for her, too.)

I get it. It’s a shitty system. I used to wish we could have a parliamentary one with meaningful coalitions, so an elected party could actually enact its platform, but the UK ruined that fantasy. It’s incremental work, and it has been for 225 imperfect, two-party years.

I don’t understand how one can play out the late night phone call hypothetical and conclude, “I’d feel safer with Trump.” Post after post of “I’m in the real world, talking to swing voters, the Democrats have LOST it” and then burrowing into some fantasy where there’s a third electable option.

For example, student loan forgiveness wasn’t on Biden’s radar until Sanders and Warren put it there. Instead Nader put Bush in the White House.

Was Ralph Nader…viable? He was welcome to run for President. His job, when it was clear he had absolutely no chance, was to throw his support to the ideologically closest electable candidate in exchange for the most additions he could get on the party platform. That’s how politics works.

I was at the big house party when they filmed that night. Some friends if mine rented the place and knew Doug Liman; he said he needed a party scene for his movie so they offered to throw one. The movie was like a documentary of my first year in LA.

NYT pundits do all the lifting for people who, say, are racists, or who think LGBTQ+ people shouldn’t exist, but they know they’re not supposed to say that out loud so they just make serious faces and say “the economy.”

And also “This undecided voter is concerned about ‘the economy.’” Trump inherited Obama’s strong one and, before botching a pandemic, did tax cuts, tariffs, and deregulation, which historically tank the economy. Biden has led a recovery. So what’s *really* her issue? And isn’t *that* the story?

Reminder that there are five ways to address the current SCOTUS problem. 1. Impeach some justices 2. Impose term limits 3. Expand the courts 4. Pass legislation limiting court prerogatives 5. Keep winning the presidency for the next 16 years or so while periodically also holding the senate.

Once again I suggest Jeffrey Rosen revisit his July 2020 hagiography, praising the collegial Roberts court for finding common ground in narrow decisions and respecting precedents.
