First, in S1 the mob is legitimately THE mob, and then in S2 it feels more like “just some guys.” And then yes, your steps track: lose money, fall mega into debt, find and return money, ask for money back. But why did he take money from the mob to stash away? Was it 0% APR??

[spoilers] his brother took loans from the mob so that he could give it to Carmy to start a restaurant. and then just hid the money without telling anyone. mob loans have high interest rates and they famously will go after anyone to collect. it’s a drug addict’s scheme but it’s played straight.
