New kitty will ignore kibble, churu, toys, if snuggles are on offer. She also let me clean out her ears & clip her claws without complaint. Not sure if cat or some sort of fae critter

When my step-grandfather was dying in the mid-80s my parents took me to visit him in the hospital several times, and apparently staff told them I shouldn't be there because there were AIDS patients on the floor (I was too young to have any memory of this). I'm glad they didn't listen

Hoo boy, she's 2, and our youngest cat was 8 when we moved here. It's been less than 24 h & I can already see we're going to need to do a lot of catproofing

Gosh can I relate. Knowing intellectually that you did the best you could doesn't help with the intense (unrealistic, thanks brain) guilt that you let them down. I hope you can be gentle with yourself while it's so fresh/raw

Well, the kitty I met at the shelter yesterday also charmed the pants off my husband and she's now establishing herself in the spare room (we'll do gradual kitty introductions). She charged out of the carrier as soon as I opened it and is busily exploring, with commentary.

Today I went to the shelter and I think I've found a new buddy for Izzy. If she hits it off with my spouse she'll come home tomorrow for a trial period. She won't fill the Quark-shaped hole (nobody could), but I think we're ready for a new friend

Anyway, he was my cuddlebug, obsessed with any source of warmth, and eventually even warmed to my then-bf now-spouse. He slept on my face, feet, throat, and would force his way under the covers and demand to be cuddled like a teddy bear

He was obviously lonely when I was pulling 14-hour days on campus, so I got Izzy for him, basically (also she was darn cute and booped me on the nose. I'm a sucker). Cue moving from Houston to Boston with two cats. That was an interesting trip

Eventually, he decided I was actually ok, and he'd let me pet him. Such an honor! Then, when he was about a year old, he broke his femur somehow, possibly by jumping off the bed. That's, uh, not a cheap surgery, especially on a grad stipend. I figured it out

I did all my homework and grading on the floor for weeks before I was deemed nonthreatening enough to be allowed to offer treats. He spent a lot of time jammed between the wall & the fridge.

He came to me as a tiny, terrified, TNR-fail of a kitten found sick under the steps of the chemistry building. Another student dropped him off for foster for "a week or 2." I never heard from that guy again.

I haven't really talked about it, but we lost Quark in late March. He'd been sick; our vet couldn't find anything wrong and referred him to the internal medicine vet clinic for diagnostics. I swear he knew we were going the next morning, and decided "nope." He passed suddenly, in my lap, at home

They also (or at least did, as of a few years ago) run classes on making your own custom lab glassware in that facility
