A 4K restoration of Akira Kurosawa’s epic Seven Samurai is heading to theaters this summer. From the trailer, it looks pretty amazing. [kottke.org]

People use the word “omakase” to refer to a kind of restaurant? And pluralize it?

Teaching it… filled with fear and anxiety! But encouraged by the #readingthestone ethos, and letting students guide the way. (Have you written anything on #RtS yet??)

Obvious but bears repeating, loudly and often: "Fund Chinese language programs more generously at American universities and high schools, and fund researchers studying China’s military, political system, economy, languages, culture and history." What we do requires money. We need more.

Your post the other day reminded me, it drives me crazy when people (still) say that xiaoshuo were “considered lowbrow” or “despised” without saying by *whom,* or under what *circumstances.* The book places 水滸 into multiple, specific contexts to show that’s wrong.

Are we doing our books on here? Mine came out in April. It shows how the traditional Chinese novel Water Margin crossed boundaries of elite and popular, private and commercial, civil and martial through the power of print. Download a copy, it's free! www.cornellpress.cornell.edu/book/9781501...

My book's been out for a while but it came out right at the start of the pandemic so I didn't get to do much promotion for it.

Anyway, if you're curious how Buddhist sites in China got destroyed and rebuilt in recent history and what it means, check it out!

Been playing around with that already, asking ChatGPT to translate fiction in the style of Anthony Yu, etc. It works better than you might expect it to, but obviously needs a human at the wheel.

My minimal ask to solve the crisis in the humanities is that political, media, business, and high ed leaders simply STOP ACTIVELY LYING about the career prospects for humanities majors. If we could just have that, everything else would be a lot easier.

Yeah... my aversion to SF extends to fantasy as well, never could do LoTR or any of that. And let's just say that, to me, 3K benefits from "distant reading." Forest rather than trees, because the very scope of the thing. I can't get all otaku about the various minor characters etc.

Blocked and reported (seriously though, it took me a long time to get into 3K but now I think it’s maybe the most rewarding of the 4. At least for teaching.)

Question for anyone familiar w both the Dandelion Dynasty stuff and Three Kingdoms etc.: How deep does the influence go? On a scale of "author shows a passing familiarity" to "specific references and coded commentary"? I have a deep aversion to SF and wondering if I should give it a go anyway.
