Does this lift the restriction on the New Yorker piece, then? No sign of that here … “Lucy Letby handed 15th whole-life jail sentence”

Something to work to, immediately, I guess. But anything else, as well.

I don't think many people would insist that the plan worked out very well.

"Isn't that problematic?" Yes, we are talking about the contents of my head here. It's very much a work in progress.

It's easy to look at this and fixate on the admittedly grisly prospect of 93 seats for Reform … but 44 for Green! What could that do, over time, with their added weight from tipping the balance?

Poetically, they actually got a pretty proportional number of seats.

Yup. Probably not the most robust 14% given dynamics like protest voting and the foregone conclusion of Tory defeat, but … yup.

I already miss the days when arguing for electoral reform aligned you with the cuddly Greens and Lib Dems, instead of … this. Nevertheless.

I'm happy with the result, and this is how it works … but it really shouldn't be. ~2/3 of the seats from ~1/3 of the vote; 12.3% can get you 71 seats, while 14.3% gets you 4 … and so does 6.8%, or 0.7%, or 0.6% …. www.theguardian.com/politics/ng-...

Very good thread this. In many ways this was a typical 2020s European election. When you consider how so many of those are ending, that's a bit worrying.

3. I'd been thinking with relief that the UK was bucking the trend of a rising radicalized far right. But I think that was premature. And Labour inherits a catastrophic landscape for governance. It will take near-perfect leadership and a lot of luck to get this right. Otherwise 2029 could be scary.

Labour has a seat for every 23,500 votes it received. Reform has a seat for every million. I *loathe* Reform, but that's not right.

Do I *want* Reform to have 14.3% of seats? Not ideally, no. But getting 0.6% of seats from 14.3% of votes is exactly the sort of thing that fuels their support.

9 seats left: Lab 410, Con 119, LD 71 … exit poll pretty much nailed the big numbers. Impressive to do that as soon as polls close.

Truss not the only recent PM whose constituency flipped: "Earlier we reported that David Cameron’s old seat of Witney had been a Liberal Democrat gain. So has Maidenhead, the former seat of Theresa May." www.theguardian.com/politics/liv...
