the mindset that the Normative American is a “Reagan Democrat” who is pissed about hippies has had such a lock on the brains of the American political class for my whole lifetime

We had a term for "Reagan Democrats" back then - Republicans.

As well as the collective trauma of the 1980, 1984, and 1988 landslide elections on Democrats who came of age then as well as pundits and publishers

The super annoying thing is that many of the Reaganites WERE hippies when it was cool to wear bell bottoms, and then when it was cool to model your life on Risky Business, changed their tune.

Looking forward to the upcoming *most important election* where we all elect Ronald Reagan to his 12th term in office

My guess is it's a reflection of the democratic distortions of the electrical college. The Normative American is the median voter in a battleground state, because every Presidential election hinges on their humours.

Yes. The most bipartisan thing for elites to agree upon is that they must always punch down and to the left.

Democrats are still pissed about the 1968 general election and the 1972 Democratic Primary. If the hippie punching was about winning elections, it could be dealt with. It's just petulant.

It's really kind of amazing how much it feels like Reagan being elected is THE moment EVERYTHING went completely wrong.

Never mind that the average "Reagan Democrat" would be c. 76 years old today. What percent of those who voted in 1980 are even alive today??

I forget who said it, but the line was something like “Reagan democrats are all in the cemetery.”

But it explains why the Democrats have been a party of conservative moderates since the 80s.

Yes, and the 1968 dem convention. That scared so many dems and we’re still seeing its impact.

I do wonder if the disconnect between the American political class and its struggle to understand Dems overperforming expectations in 2018, 2020, 2022, and countless recent special elections is that few under the age of say 45 or so shares their idea of Reagan Democrats being the normative American.

And it continues. I’m witnessing it pressed into the mind of a person who now thinks she’s “center-right”, because she’s reactionary and doesn’t have time for context and nuance when she dips into the political sphere.

The Dem leadership has been locked in on this since the 80s, too. Permanently cringing in fear.

They're not right, but they're not completely wrong. The Normative American is basically "Whig measures, and Tory Men" updated for a new millenium.
