RTS-ing on a three-button controller - Dune: The Battle for Arrakis on Sega Mega Drive. A superbly implemented port of the Amiga/DOS RTS. Snappy cursor movement and a minimalistic UI that served as a testbed for Command & Conquer's.
I played soooo much of this on DOS! To the point where I learned how to make custom maps from Compuserve and how to share them. Turns out it all is stored in scenario.pak in easily readable hexeditable text π
This port is just genius! I love the Amiga version (except the disk swapping π) and appreciate the PC version with the amazing midi-OST, but really learned to play and admire the game on the Megadrive.
I loved building walls of rocket turrets in this. Enemy units would approach and they're just get a volley of shit firing at them which would continue for several seconds after they'd been reduced to a smoking crater.
