Always compelling and absolutely bonkers, EXXOS's Captain Blood from 1988, Commodore Amiga version. The game where a mummified video game creator and captain of an organic starship chases down clones of himself and talks to aliens through emoticons. French sci-fi surrealism at its finest.

Picking up a hardback copy of the Star Trek Encyclopedia yesterday got me hankering to fire up our CDROM version - Encylopedia '99. Simon & Schuster put out heaps of these kind of things in the mid-late 90s. You couldn't walk into any software store then without seeing them lining the shelves.

East meets West with Project Gotham Racing 2 for the original Xbox. The cool stylized, almost art deco vibe to the world graphics makes me think of the later A-Train games. 📺: Project Gotham Racing 2, Bizarre Creations, 2003 (RGB SCART)

📖 Bytes of Game Ads 📺 Namco hit hard on the shmup and arcade sprite scalers on the console front in 1990 with FINALBLASTER and BURNING FORCE. You might wonder why you sometimes see NAMCOT on their games, not NAMCO. NAMCOT was the name used for the home games division's releases until 1995.

Digging around in one of my storage boxes and unearthed a relic of AD&D's early 90s bump in popularity and TSR's efforts to introduce the game to a wider audience. This is one of the modules for TSR's Mystara campaign setting that had audio CDs with them to aid new GMs in adding immersion.

One of the sweetest and most whimsical game developer logos. The adventurous raccoon-ish creature that was Traveller's Tales' mascot and logo. Later versions were CGI animated renders until he vanished in 2005 in favour of the current double T, but this 1997 version is my favourite one.

An image of zen for your Bluesky feeds with the original Settlers game - Amiga version. Those familiar with it will likely now have the bird song, the chopping of wood, and the medieval melody that compliments the industrious tranquillity. Oh, and the 'Yipee!' as a prospector finds some ore. 💜

"He who controls the blast processing controls the universe!" RTS-ing on a three-button controller - Dune: The Battle for Arrakis on Sega Mega Drive. A superbly implemented port of the Amiga/DOS RTS. Snappy cursor movement and a minimalistic UI that served as a testbed for Command & Conquer's.

Yeah, I got burned out by reruns of Z eps and the overly long fight arcs. I always preferred watching the Dragonball series where it was more of an adventure series and that's what I'd watch again now.

Yeah, really was just the same 25-30 Genesis games for decades until the Mini 2. I'd love to see the SMS get some more love too as while for me personally the library isn't as strong as the NES's, there's still a heap to enjoy from it and deserves fresh love.

Worth doing so, especially for the relative pennies they go for! And yeah, they're pretty ubiquitous despite being for a niche audience on Genesis/MD. I always love seeing the MD being pushed to do stuff like this.

Come on down, hidden pillar number five! It's little known now compared to the others, but Mig-29 from Domark received a rather accomplished port in 1993. And this is easily the most simulation-heavy of the quintet. Wisely, they made use of the six button joypad and in-game menus for functionality.

The four pillars of flight sim-mery on Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, published from 1991 to 1993. Varying degrees of simulation accuracy but rich in vibes and presentation to fill in the gaps left by cramming it all into three buttons and a start button. Night Storm is easily the most cinematic.

Today I've learned that there was a compilation containing both Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II for the original Game Boy. What's curious about it is that it was rated T by the ESRB, despite the series' long history of M-rated games, beating Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe to the punch by a decade.

This is one of my core arcade memories, though I didn't actually play it much. It was one of the more expensive games at my local shopping centre arcade in '95, and I remember watching the intro and attract loop so many times while waiting for a turn on Knights of the Round.

I don't HATE Metroid Other M so far. It's very much a Team Ninja game and less of a real Metroid game tho so it plays more like Ninja Gaiden. Also probably more my TV than the game but it's way too dark. The lighting is very pretty but whenever there's shadows on screen I can barely see anything.
