I think (again could be wrong) that the free trade agreement means you don’t need a labour market opinion for an American unlike for a citizen of a country outside this agreement.

but totally agree that immigration is WAYYYYY harder than people who have never tried it imagine it to be.

I can say that having done work/study permit immigration paperwork in 3 countries as a (then) American the process was vastly easier in Canada than the other 2.

I'm (obviously) not an immigration expert, but I thought for Americans its somewhat easier than average at least if you have a profession that's covered under the free trade agreement and you get an offer, employers don't need to go through as many steps and the application can be done at the border

With many caveats about how climate change is making this worse and the challenge of energy affordability/housing affordability... as someone who grew up in the Central Valley this part of the story has me 🫠
You were surprised to learn the Central Valley is hot?

We put ours in after sealing up our old home and realizing the air quality was more of an issue but even in the presealed version there was a room that was always stuffy I think it would be interesting to understand how much better I could do in our home with active management, vs it being marginal

That would be great - I need to look into what it would take to get that piece you mentioned. I've read various different things about how important an ERV is vs just mechanical ventilation in terms of energy savings 1/

Ahead of my book release, I wrote a piece for the newly launched Break/ Down, which focuses on capitalism and the climate crisis. In it, I preview one of my main arguments on what a just transition does- and doesn’t- entail

I like the first one because im ok with it getting a bit colder than notmal if it will heat up again. I’d add, “but if the forecast is for 10 degrees tomorrow then don’t use rhe cool night air and keep the temperature at 20, or whatever”

The zender, if I understand, does this somewhat but without the forecast feature. So you can end up precooling the house but then it turns out the upcoming week is a cold one.

I suppose one would have to look into how much this matters - maybe adding a bit of additional energy when you overdo it isn’t that big of a deal, but it pains me.

Exactly! The problem we run into here is it can get very cool for multiple days in the summer so you can’t just go with “cool the house as much as possible” knowing that during the day you will warm up again (this was my moms approach in a hot climate and it was cold some mornings but only morning)

I guess in most places its just - get as much heat out of the house during cool nights/days - but its very possible to end up cooling down the house so much that you need to bundle up inside for days or turn on the heater. If you need test subjects for a system I'm game @kevinjkircher.com!

This may be a niche Calgary problem, because in most places summer is just summer, but I wish there was a smart HRV/ERV control that used weather forecasts to optimize heat exchange levels to keep the home as close to a desired set point without heating or cooling. My Zender just sets hot or cold.

Had a dream last night about a utility appearing to offer time of use rates in Calgary and I was trying to figure out how they were doing so given lack of smart meters so work/life balance is clearly going really well over here.

And some of the more Provincial actions (Alberta going from 80% in 2014 to 0% now in 2024) get hidden in the country average. Which is not a criticism of the list, just interesting to see there are some big moves in other places too at a sub national level!

The first few chapters are really hard (I put the book down for a few months after that). But picking it up again was well worth it.

We had the privilege of having a chat about the book with the author here www.energyvsclimate.com/stranger-tha...

So basically because people walk around outside.
What if there was a way to live where even people who didn’t have dogs regularly had reasons to get around on foot or by bike (ie not in a car) 🤔

Its from Moustache Bikes, recommended and purchased from @bikebikeyyc.bsky.social

It's new for me and so far it has just the right mix of everything from a practical perspective aside from the (admittedly silly) fact that I liked the styling of my old fashioned Gazelle more.
