We were told he was the only candidate who could beat Trump despite the fact that Trump was losing to a generic Democrat in the polls back in 2018.

...and he was the chosen candidate after an abbreviated primary, due to covid and fear that a regular fight would somehow help Trump. A real primary *this* year would have been fair to voters and would have tested Biden at the appropriate moment.
