I wish all of them a very, very, very, very, very, very, very long old age in which to reflect on their lives.

"[Ebert's] syllabus consisted of the old movies he would watch between press screenings at Chicago revival houses like the Clark Theater, an old movie palace in the Loop where $2.95 got you a ticket, free parking, & a three-course meal at the Chinese restaurant next door."

Hey, those do look good. Very amused that when you go to the Midwest tab of "What's Cooking Near Me" they're immediately like, "Yeah, we're not gonna even bother offering you people the vegan options, we gotta turn a profit here."

Same with actors, unless they're authentically famous it's all "Brink Chambray is the hot happening future of Hollywood? He & costar the Hon. Prudence Alice de Pinquesissel Montgomery-Chase-Saltburn are 'bringing the heat' in Magic Man 14: The Magicking? I will absolutely take your word on that."

It's a true advantage of being over 50 that nobody expects you to know about any of this shit anymore, ever.

Don't panic BTW if you bring this up & they want to do cardiac testing first. Mine was fine but the doctor wrote "suspected congestive heart failure" on the forms to get insurance to cover the testing (causing me to panic & call him for clarification).

Adjusting to the meds isn't easy (fatigue at the outset), but if that's the underlying issue it really will help. My underlying anxiety hasn't magically vanished but my whole body physically revving up to take me on a magical ride I never asked for has been greatly diminished.

Bleeding legal immigrants plus "if the law says I get to bleed out in an ER parking lot if I have a miscarriage then fine, I'm making sure I never get pregnant." Speaking of what you said about how none of these people can work out the actual longterm consequences of anything they impose.

When I first saw the Pantigate stuff I thought "Oh no, John Waters of all people doing some kind of transphobic-cis-gay heel turn?!" & was both relieved & felt very foolish to find out no.

I mean, I graduated law school in the mid-1990s, CLS always struck my unscholarly ass as plain common sense & his kind were always at total war with it, they simply wouldn’t hear it. “It’s like you’re somehow saying the entire concept of blind justice is predicated on a patently obvious lie!”

Absolutely. Apparently we all get to find out the hard way that if you keep trying to impose an 18th century ideological model on a 21st century world you leave a massive space for an insurgent 14th century to occupy.

In all seriousness, this is what happens when you spend decades denying the self-evident truths of critical legal studies in favor of some sick fantasy of perfect mechanistic Enlightenment reasoning. The entire law school model is as broken as everything else in our culture, but, you knew that.

It’s a damned crime Kotto didn’t have a bigger career & Pryor wasn’t more recognized as a gifted dramatic actor. Even in uneven stuff like Lady Sings the Blues he’s great.

As someone weirdly obsessed with surfing though I’ve never surfed or really wanted to (it’s cold & wet out there, man), just passing along that later this month TCM is showing a ton of Bruce Brown surfing documentaries. Endless Summer’s narration is…very of its era but you can always watch on mute.

The horrible exhilaration I can see some people experiencing now that they feel they “don’t have to pretend” anymore is…it does kind of endanger the belief in any kind of longterm social progress. Also covid broke so many brains around me & it absolutely won’t be our last pandemic.

No, it’ll be a completely different distribution model—I know a lot of filmmakers are already trying to figure it out among themselves—& a different measure of success. Hollywood as a thing is doomed longterm, I think, as your list shows all the creative energy’s already elsewhere.

I think it’s a part of the secret history of rock and roll that Kraftwerk got played on the biggest and most influential radio station in the US, WLS, because the station did their own novelty version of Autobahn and made it about Chicago: “flyin’ flyin’ flyin’ on the old Dan Ryan”.

I’m still holding out hope that there will be again in the future, but we have to get through this whole period of even deeper institutional/cultural rot first. Just call me a cockeyed optimist.

It’s still extraordinary to me that there was that brief period when Hollywood would greenlight films that actually expressed some of the rot at the heart of the dominant culture & its institutions, & by God they’re never letting that happen again.

I don’t have any strong opinions about either of these people, other than enjoying some of Childish’s 87,462 albums from his 9,483 different bands, but this is still one hell of a she-said, he-said. “We have such a good relationship now.” “She’s self-obsessed & I keep her at arm’s length.”

I keep insisting though that a lot of these people will still vote for it assuming there’ll be some kind carve-out specifically for them, the in group. (They’d be wrong, the only carve-out would be the usual “rich enough to fly anywhere to get anything,” but by that time the damage is done.)

Decades ago—as a random college student, so the information was out there—I told people how the Federalist Society very explicitly said “We want to overturn Roe, the Civil Rights Act & the entire New Deal” & was told I sounded hysterical. Same thing now, nobody will believe it until it’s them.
