Your thoughts/instincts were absolutely correct. Could any halfway competent attorney have gotten that dropped? Yes. In the meantime, your best case scenario is having to get off work for court dates and your worst is having to sit in jail until you post bond.

*If* you can afford bond. I was on a jury where the defendant sat in jail for 6 months awaiting trial, only for the state to produce experts that testified that: The fingerprints and footprints found DID NOT match those of the defendant. Police testified no witnesses saw the suspect at the scene.

Getting caught up in the legal system is extremely disruptive, and not necessarily even by design (as some cynics assume): even a well-intentioned process is limited by caseloads, personnel, courtroom availability, etc. A malign system? Forget about it. You'll see a judge if/when they get to you.
