Studies have shown that it is ideology & tribalism that drives climate denial; and in turn, much of todayβs ideology + polarization is driven by fear of loss of privilege. Those in the demographic that have been at the top of the pyramid for so long are threatened by anything that challenges that.

I was rather alarmed this morning to discover that the 5 litre container from Ecostore I've been refilling my detergent bottle from for the last six months was not labelled "Dish Liquid" but "Laundry Liquid". We seem to have survived, but I'm glad I'm a diligent rinser!

Here's what everyone needs to know* about climate change:
π It's real
π₯ It's human-caused
β οΈ It's serious
π‘ With immediate action, it's solvable
β Later is too late
* social science shows these msgs increase acceptance of the issue, awareness of the risk and, most importantly, willingness to act.

Like the silver bullet claims, our individualistic society's obsession with personal carbon footprint also leads to despair, when we realize our personal reductions won't fix the problem.
When we realize individuals CAN change the world, acting together, I believe that's where hope is found π

So many thoughts. Thank you for asking!!!
For-profit news has a well-established negative bias, because bad news generates the most shares + clicks.
Because they're not incentivized to share news of positive progress, there's a significant imbalance in what's being communicated.

Seriously: ASK THEM! I want to know what they say, I want them to explain their answer, and I want those answers shared so we can all see them.
Effective communication begins with understanding where people are, and who's more important to communicate with than the people who make the decisions?

IMHO one of the hardest concepts for people worried about climate change to grasp is that fear-based messages alone are not enough to catalyze change at scale.
Fear wakes us up (EPPM, Witte 1992); but if we don't think we can do anything about it (self-efficacy, Bandera 1977), we will do nothing.

Here's our irony of the day. As @volts.wtf says ...
Yet those of us who relentlessly share that good news are too often stigmatized as hopium peddlers by others worried about climate...which discourages us from doing the very thing social science shows is most effective at motivating people to act.

No, we do not have only 'two years left to save the earth.'
First, it's not about saving the earth. This ball of rock will be orbiting the sun long after we're gone. It's about saving all of us living things that call it home.
Second, there is no such deadline. What the science says is very clear:

No subsidies for the cruise ship industry. Ratepayers contribute to the profit of cruise ship corporations through subsidised on-shore transport including buses & rail, as well as sponsoring NZ Cruise Assn conference, promotion, and training and admin costs for cruise ship volunteers.

I advocate for 50-50: 50% the risks of inaction to things we care about (our kids rather than the Greenland ice sheet, or our favorite sports or food rather than AMOC) and 50% the benefits of climate actions (for our health, well-being, pocketbooks, and for justice, equity, + a better world for all)
