People keep referencing guillotines & gallows, but the American response to this situation has tended to range from "mob justice" to "mail bombs"
For these reasons, past generations of US elites have sought to preserve at least the *illusion* of a fair system of laws. But the mask is fully off now.

"The concert was lackluster, pretty low energyβ¦so I ended up staring at the thing a lot and thinking about how some select archetypes are embedded in humans across cultures and continental divides. Joseph Campbell stuff."

"I went to a Dylan concert in NYC around the time the Dark Tower came out, and the backdrop for the show had a very similar eye design. In red even. I thought, 'what the hell?'

You may notice the stylized eye in the middle of the chaos star. It preceded the eye of the Crimson King by decades, so I asked Michael about it this morning and wanted to share his response. 1/

Shifting gears back into creative mode this morning. I don't even want to tell you how many font combinations I went through. π
We'll be announcing the launch of the 2024 gallery soon. First original is back from the frame shop, and it is a heavy hitter! (Clue in today's post what it will be π)

Yes, Michael is involved in licensing decisions with Audrey handling the details. Years ago he had an agent who handled int'l rights but that's all in-house now.
They've had a decades long relationship with Rob and the band. I met Rob at the BSF retrospective in Riverside.

That's why I'm publicly shaming them for betraying the creative community they are supposed to serve. Lawsuits will hit their bottom line eventually but in the meantime this is a start.

Side project this week: digitally archiving the contents of WORKS OF WONDER. I scanned the book years ago but OCR is so much better now. I'll eventually put the whole thing into ebook format like WONDERWORKS...and maybe someday I'll actually do something with them!

The first piece in the 2024 Leftover & Palette Gremlin gallery project is at the framers now.
We'll be announcing the start of the gallery via email and will tease the schedule here before it drops. I would expect that in the next few weeks.

Bug or feature? Given the behavior of tech giants in the age of GAI the answer should be obvious to all.

I haven't read the series but I see what you're saying in that they haven't aged well. Always an interesting dilemma for curation, separating the cover from the source. π€

The painting is listed as acrylic but the description confused me as well. I'll confirm with Michael when he comes out of the studio.

They scraped EVERYTHING. The list that came out with the class action suit included over 12K artists.
The right image was created with a LoRA "in Michael Whelan's style" (using Michael's art π). I called out the site last year on Twitter.
The NYT included the thread in a feature on AI.

Michael licensed through Antioch years ago (bookmarks, journals, calendars) but they're no longer in business. I still have an old catalog for 1999/2000 in my files.

I don't think there's a question of how the work of 10K+ artists got into the dataset. The focus will be how the court sees specious claims of fair use.
The damage to working artists has already been realized. Kelly has talked openly about the financial impact as have many in the community.

Years ago we offered 3 of the Chanur paintings as prints but I'm afraid those sold out long ago.
We have reissued prints of older covers when there's demand. If you send in a request, I'll follow up with you if anything develops.

Michael's Portals paintings were deeply inspired by his travels to the British isles. Particularly, they spent a lot of time in Wales where his wife Audrey has family.

We're hoping to make it to Dragonsteel this year to show off the new cover art. The timing is always a barrier as it comes during our holiday rush, but we're going to try!

Michael mixes colors out of the tube so there's no easy way to match Pantone values. The painting sold years ago so prints are the best color match. We also have high res wallpapers available to sample from.
Sorry, I asked and unfortunately that was the best answer we could come up with.

The "Sign of the Times" paintings are a subset of Michael's personal work done as meditations of a sort.
The red, white and blue color scheme and overt message here, however, should be a clue that there was more on his mind when he painted this.
And so it is with me as I curate this...

I visited Manhattan with Michael years later and we went to the memorial. It was such a somber experience. I'll have to dig through my photos. I think he shared some pics with me that he snapped on his Nikon.

Folks do not like to acknowledge it, but the reality is you have no first amendment right if the police are allowed to arrest you when you have broken no law, and are assembling in the effort to petition power for a redress of grievance. All the rhetorical trickery aside, it comes down to that.
