People keep referencing guillotines & gallows, but the American response to this situation has tended to range from "mob justice" to "mail bombs" For these reasons, past generations of US elites have sought to preserve at least the *illusion* of a fair system of laws. But the mask is fully off now.

Iirc back in the day they'd gather around judges or politicians houses and raise enough hell that no one could sleep for days.

Also, didn't SCOTUS just kind of rule that maybe it's not THAT illegal to invade Congress and shut down the Capitol?

Well put. And the transformation of justice into retribution with no accountability. It’s anarchy.

I do wonder if part of the reason for the SCOTUS ruling and the media's pro-Trump bias is anger and anxiety that the elite bipartisan social contract was broken when Trump was indicted. Sure, no one is above the law, but the understanding was the law won't really be applied to the powerful.

Exactly my thoughts when I saw last week's rulings: in most of the world you'd get riots pretty fast Wonder what it'll be in the US In fact I think if there is no action (like: general strike and massive demonstrations) I'd be rather worried about total apathy

The "Biden is doomed" narrative that plays into GOP plans to seize power is part of this. The media loves that narrative, pundits love that narrative, and you better believe that Russian bots love that narrative. The only signs that Biden isn't doomed are in reality, which no one checks.

in keeping with an Originalist legal doctrine I think tar and feather would absolutely be appropriate modes of protest under the First Amendment’s Free Speech and Assembly clauses

The mask is off in the same way airplane hijacking rules changed after 9/11: compliance won't keep us safe, so now we know to beat hijackers into pulp.

NC and SC during the latter half of the Revolution, or Bleeding Kansas prior to the Civil War I think are illustrative. Opposing militias with guns hitting hones and businesses on either side. In the Carolinas, occasional retaliation killings lasted a couple decades after the Revolution.

Been thinking a lot about this the past couple years. IMO the elites - not the fictitious "global elites" MAGA refers to, actual elites with names like Koch - have been blind to or are grossly miscalculating the fallout if they get their way. A pyrrhic victory at best. Careful what you wish for.

One of my real concerns if Trump wins is the emergence of armed neighborhood defense groups and/or ethnic militias. I don’t think we were super far from this in San Diego last time. Take away institutionalized forms of resistance and the situation is way more dangerous.

If I had a coherent major in college and masters school, it was how to "democratize" formerly autocratic nations who were looking to reduce corruption and establish new legal & cultural practices under the rule of fair law. None of the countries in question had anything like what is now _legal_ here
