Dear god.. keep your distance. That’s a sign of some pure hatred of women right there. She’s explained over & over that the overdubs were John’s wishes, and even if they weren’t, she could do whatever the fuck she wants. (Lastly, that album sounds great)

To take a break from terrible national/world news, I’ve been watching clips of alligators mating - don’t judge - and it’s the most pure and adorable thing ever, straight out of a “Love is…” comic

The Great Molasses Flood in Boston is something I randomly happened upon when I was googling "The Molasses Disaster" as a possible band name in the early 2000s. I'm surprised it's not referenced more often, moreso that it's still relatively unknown.

A belated RIP to Duane Eddy (4/30) which I missed. Massive catalog for just '58-'66 - 16 albums & more non-LP singles. You can shuffle 200 Eddy songs & bob your head to every single one. I love the really dark fuzzed out twang on his version of "House of the Rising Sun".

Rock/Pop Estates are entities I'm not going to pretend to know about or like. It's all Corpse Capitalism in the end. There are many bizarre internal battles that have bizarre random consequences. I appreciate the Second Disc article for asking the questions for fans politely. (add "Camille" too!)

ILXOR THE BOOK: you know someone has thought about it. I actually think it's a good idea, not for the sake of the seasonal drama, but as a way to plot a timeline of the 21st century through a very unique international community.

I am *very* familiar with the nomadic aspects of everything talked about here, though it’s not always out of necessity: ILXor is still around but I just needed a change

I would imagine hearing "19" would itself be PSTD for those vets. But I'm not a vet, and maybe many felt like they were heard.

..and that brings us to the legendary Puttin On The Hits performance. My dark thought is: is turning a horrible tragedy of the past into a moment of enjoyable cultural pastiche the best case scenario for reconciling with said tragedy? Are we getting a #1 charting COVID twerk in the 2030s?

..so certain radio U.S. programmers take a chance on "19", perhaps given its success across the world by then. Of course, you could put any sound over the Hardcastle electro beat, and people would like it, so it becomes a hit in the U.S. too... 2/

I imagine that there were enough popular/influential radio DJs in the U.S. in the mid 80s that were former teenage Vietnam War protesters. Reagan has just been re-elected in a landslide and is threatening anyone with annihilation at this point, so along comes a visceral anti-war dance jam... 1/

I have a LOT of thoughts about the popularity of Paul Hardcastle's "19". It "only" peaked at #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1985 -- which is honestly miraculous for that chart, but was an easy international #1 hit and easily a U.S. Dance Chart #1 hit. I am complete spitballing, so bare with me... 🧵

Once a year, I think about the 80s TV show "Puttin' on the Hits" and it's always the Paul Hardcastle "19" performance that the audience was going NUTS over. "Putting on the Hits" was basically 80s pre-internet TikTok Dances on broadcast TV.

I was trying to find the most insane music in the late 80s, and when I played the first track from No New York, it was almost too insane for me to process. A few seconds later, I was dancing like a maniac in my room. RIP James Chance.

It took me 32 years, but I'm finally catching up with all things Yo La Tengo. I left off with 1992's May I Sing With Me, and I don't know why I stopped there - probably because I was getting into hardcore/noise right after, but what a high quality immense catalog. 40 years! 32 with the same lineup!

Many thanks to @themodernfolk.bsky.social for giving me a reason to go see him play the all ages(?)/DIY spot in Fremont, Seattle called Casa del Xolo + a full lineup I've never seen and feel completely welcome and relaxed at a rock show, which is very rare these days (for me, anyway.)

There are a lot of reasons (racism, sexism, homophobia, ageism, etc.) that people don't like electronic dance music, but foremost is that critics overintellectualize every kind of music and most can't, or don't like to, dance. Self-conscious nerds have marginalized one if the most fun things ever

I watched a Chicago doc last night. The usual “villains” of the band - Cetera, Guercio, Champlin - declined to be in the doc, but David Foster accepted, dressed up and confidently laid into the band hard with a smooth smirk on his face. I 100% respect that.

I'm really looking forward to the late June boxed set of Joni Mitchell's 1976-1980 albums. *NOT* looking forward to the cries of "censorship" for the newly cropped cover art of Don Juan's Reckless Daughter.

Sarah Squirm and Redd Kross are on the Best Show tonight (6pm PT, pm ET) I really wish the Best Show account was here on Bluesky, but I think it was scared off early on by the immediate post-Twitter "No Self Promoters Allowed Whatsoever!" zeitgeist.

I dreamt I heard "The Price is Right" theme song, but in the style of an early 60s Blue Note jazz performance: slower, more somber, and with more percussion. I've also been listening to Hank Mobley non-stop during work hours, and happened upon some brightly colored Bob Barker memes out of my will.

I think I’m alone in being able to listen to literally a day straight of Stereolab’s entire studio discography. So I can’t empathize with folks having trouble just listening to “only” the new remastered Switched On Vols 1-5 boxed set.
