I can definitely see it being an issue in a lot of major US cities. The NYC housing landscape is something I haven't delved into at all. Strikes me as immensely complex.

I only care about that if the market has somehow broken and affordable apartments aren't being built while massive units like this are. We are not there, though. Far from it.

I don't have a great understanding of things like autism etc that they had included in their bio so have tried not to read into why it was happening too much, but yeah.

I heavily gave them the benefit of the doubt because of details in their bio and a level of trust granted by them being followed by people I respect. Still, it was like being hit by a whirlwind and then when I pushed back being accused of all sorts of shit. Head was spinning.

I've heard banks are sometimes reluctant to lend against dual key apartments, too. They're rental enshittification personified.

Think you're right on the maximum size self-regulating here, though. Not so much in other countries. We do have to keep an eye on it, and I can see how it might be useful in places like Queenstown if applied to housing more broadly.

OK, but there's a few things that make me tilt towards assuming the best here. Their bio, their obvious good intention in resisting limitless liberalism, and we have followers in common. Based on this I just choose to assume the best and that internet conversations are hard sometimes.

I think that's harsh. I put this interaction down to a difference in communication styles and perspectives. It's not so much politeness as an active effort from me to try to understand where someone is coming from and engage in good faith.

Again, I don't think that. I don't think you're stupid, I don't think you're arrogant, I'm genuinely just trying to understand a view that I truly don't think applies to the housing market here at the moment.

I don't think we're having the same discussion at the moment. We seem to be coming at this issue from completely different lived-experience. Your perspective might be 100% accurate in some countries/cities. It is not the issue facing Aotearoa.

You know I'm talking about Aotearoa (New Zealand), yeah? Where we simply don't have the issue you're talking about but absolutely have an issue with not enough apartments being built at all?

I'm not talking about 'on things'. I'm talking about apartment floor sizes. There's nothing wrong with building a four bedroom apartment. That's not what is restricting housing supply. Having a minimum apartment size limit *is* restricting supply.

Technically, yes, that's a policy choice. Practically though, defining a maximum apartment size would be either pointless or harmful or both. Removing minimum sizes adds far more housing than adding a maximum.

Another concern people have is around protecting farming land. The trigger for this was Bish announcing councils wouldn't be able to set a hard Rural/Urban boundary anymore.
That's true, but there's far more to it than this line that some cities currently define:

Thread here I made while reading through it. bsky.app/profile/stef...
Lots of folk still have trauma around leaky buildings but *nothing* in his announcement made leaky buildings more likely than they are right now.
Lots of NZ is intensifying rapidly already. This just makes that easier.

It's totally ok, no hard feelings at all. I've been posting *a lot* about this lately. I heavily agree with most of what Bishop announced in his speech this week. I heavily disagree with almost everything else he's done.

I'm also happy to repeat this until the cows come home, for what it's worth: this government is a band of crooks, Bishop is a prick, defunding KO is a crime.

Thanks. For the record, all it is a commentary on is a resistance to intensifying cities and increasing housing density. 'Don't let them build bland houses' is a common argument from people who don't want town houses or apartments in their neighbourhood.

Small business owners are not experts on street design, parking policy, or transportation. Many of them barely know how to run their own businesses! Expecting trained professional planners to defer to their judgment is bananas.

Yeah that's really the highlight here. The only real sameness for me is that town houses look like town houses. The semi-transparent brickwork and other design features here are standouts.

Oh I completely agree with that. It's just the 2019 vs 2024 total vote thing looks different when the turnout gap is included.

Some of this is explained by turnout being much lower than 2019. 2019: 67.3% 2024: 59.8% (provisional)
