Of course the other explanation (and possibly the most likely one) is that he knows conservatives (and possibly himself) were the beneficiaries of foreign interference, and wants to maintain plausible deniability

It just seems like a weird thing to be obstinate about for a conservative, given that they are usually the pro-cop party, and love to portray themselves as friends of the military and security forces. But maybe COVID and the freedom convoy changed that?
