He surely wasn't the only one to "teach" that, was he? While I can't think of other comics artists (who were great at drawing evironmental fx) I think of how Disney studios would teach their artists to properly draw. It, of course, required lots of studying. "Pinocchio" is one of the early results

I regularly pore over the WASH TUBBS section in my copy of The Smithsonian Collection of Newspaper Comics. Still astounds me to this day!
