My bad-movie group watched INVASION U.S.A. last week. Now at irregular moments, I keep murmuring "It's time" to myself like Norris as he's about to explode Richard Lynch. This goes away eventually, right?

It'd be sort of fun to comb through the line's history for the least powerful/competent canon lineups and pit them against one another. I think the X-Men bottomed out right at the start. Lee/Kirby Jean was pretty useless.

King never really gave himself that opening. He'd opted out of the convention circuit by 1983 or so, cf. Harlan Ellison's "Xenogenesis," so his only real window for misbehavior would've been when he was touring with the Rock Bottom Remainders. I assume Amy Tan would've hit him with a chair.

I have this half-written article that never found a venue about how Gladiator has one of the worst lives in Marvel. If he shows up in the comics and he's not being written by Abnett/Lanning, Gladiator's about to get dumpstered to establish the stakes of the current story.

This is why I admire Stephen King, who had the good sense to hit rock bottom in the first decade of his career and spent the next 35 years climbing back up. An icon. A hero.

In retrospect, the Imperial Guard spent the last 30 years as the jobbers of Cosmic Marvel because of that doofy Jim Lee arc of UXM where the Guard gets the shit kicked out of it by the X-Men and Starjammers. That was even weird then, and marks the start of the decline.

From Wolverine's bone claws to Sabretooth's obscure sidekick to Iron Man's strongest attack to Thanos' depressing rebound girlfriend, here are the aspects of the Marvel vs. Capcom games that feel like a time capsule for the 1990s. www.denofgeek.com/games/the-ca...

I'm increasingly glad for Bluesky's "reply to a blocked post" clarifications, because otherwise, following you would make me think that you occasionally post random curses for no particular reason.

For the last couple of months, I've been writing a weekly column on #indiegames on @hard-drive.net, via its non-fiction Minus World section.

This week's column is on Spitfire Interactive's CAPES, which I didn't know was getting a total rework until I was already racing my deadline. Oops.

The Cthulhu to Eva to '90s fanfic to Led Zeppelin sex metaphor is too great a semantic drift even for me.

There's a particular cultural notion in America, encouraged by our popular fiction, that all our problems can and should be solved by one man who knows just who to shoot. We need administrators; we want cowboys.

We're still dealing with the psychic damage from the late 20th century's crime waves, where every city got encoded in the popular imagination as a blood-soaked hellhole. A lot of people subsequently built a political career off of encouraging that.

I was just talking to someone the other day about "Children of a Lesser God," an Evangelion fanfic from the late '90s, which was about child soldiers in giant mecha vs. Mythos manifestations. There's still juice in that lemon, if you ask me.

As somebody who's been a freelance writer for most of the last 25 years, I can't shift into "work mode" unless I'm wearing street clothes. There has to be some sense that I'm going to do my job or I simply don't click over.

You are actively refusing to engage with his point, which is very simple: the time to cut the Democrats loose on a national level is *after* you've established your viable alternative. For the time being, as much as they suck, they're preferable to a coalition of wannabe theocrats.

I think if a liberal justice was ever seen in line at the same Dick's Drive-In as George Soros, the machine would treat that as self-evident proof of a degenerate coalition. We'd watch it evolve in real time to "hey, they like cheap burgers" to "they have sacrificed 10,000 white babies to Mammon."

There's this hour-long interview with him on Hank Green's Study Hall channel on YouTube, and it made a few things about Mulligan's whole deal add up for me: * close to his mom, who wrote comics/plays * bullied badly enough in school that she pulled him out * RPGs were his main social activity

I said reduction, not elimination. I am no happier than you that the best argument for Biden is that he isn't Trump, and therefore, isn't a hand puppet for Christian regressives. It's still a stark contrast, particularly in light of Trump's immediate family ties to Netanyahu.

That was one of my big takeaways from the Trump years. There's a tendency to see everything from the top down, but realistically, if you want change, you have to start locally. The president can't/shouldn't be involved on your block.

At the end of the day, I don't need to be excited about the top of the ticket to be excited about this election. The presidential election is a root canal. Unfun but probably important not to avoid. DOWN BALLOT IS WHERE IT'S AT! Let's codify abortion! Let's kick these bitches off school boards!

There are tons of other systems that have more flexible rules, or better RP options, or more thrilling combat, or put the players in more danger, etc. D&D 5e is just kind of a 7/10 across the board. It's a gateway drug.

I've been running it for a while now, because I'm on the WotC review list and it made me want to sit down and learn the game. 5E does feel like D&D with those inflatable bumpers they put into the gutters at the bowling alley. I'd argue that it does everything a TTRPG needs to do, just adequately.

I'd really like to see an action-adventure movie that flipped the script on that, where nobody ever dies but sex and/or nudity is always what saves the day. It'd probably have to be French.
