Alas, I do not have any such fun work stories to share & my serious ones all boil down to "why are all you lot farming in the most foolish way possible?" so. No joy in Mudville.

Heh. Cousin dipshit hasn't even gotten our invitations from one farm to another, so I may have a valid* excuse to not attend that wedding... *it won't work. Dad will do The Whiiiining at me. Sigh.

I have no suggestions, I've avoided such talk mostly by NOT being the oldest unmarried cousin on Dad's side & Mom's side having the sense to not be rudeniks.

These people like to talk up the "old days" when most people were farmers--well I sure as hell knew what a placenta was courtesy of growing up on a farm! You can't be that big of an ignorant fuck & succeed in raising livestock...

This guy was from western PA, tho--their mountains aren't much more impressive! I've got a geology of WI book that mentions old tourist ads comparing the Porkies to the Tetons--flatteringly!--which is a hilarious exaggeration!

I didn't learn to ice-skate until college! It's a very odd place for the Midwest. Also why I got v. Annoyed about people calling me a Flatlander when I went to grad school out west. Someone suggested I'd never seen hills before! No, buddy, it's not all Kansas...

The really weird thing is, parts of it DO have very ancient glacial drift in small remnants--so it wasn't completely missed (WI north of the Black River & the parts in IA & MN). Not a single erratic where I grew up, though, & no natural lakes either.

Current running theory is that the dome of granite in central WI split the glaciers since it was a high, resistant point. And probably after the first time that happened, it became easier for subsequent glaciers to just go around the bumpy bit rather than through.

Speaking of β€œdon’t drink raw milk”, a timely reminder that it’s not just flu that makes pasteurization the lifesaving innovation that it is.

Also that if you let manufacturers ignore safety, they will, and they’ll *keep* doing it.

Superior, too, at least in its current form. There's suspicion that there's still glacial meltwater in it, given how slowly water cycles through!

I'd have to double check about what really ancient glaciations might've done, but this part of the continent wasn't under oceans during the Pleistocene ice ages. The limestone was deposited much longer ago--Silurian at latest, IIRC.

Then the till is what we dig basements into, so Rn escapes into those spaces. So we can blame Canada, or northern WI. Arsenic came from the granites up there, too; but also the St. Peter sandstone, which does exist in IA.

Hm. My understanding was that the recent glaciers brought granite down from Canada etc., which has U in it from its formation. The till is the source, which is why radon isn't a concern in the Driftless (the limestone predates the glaciers).

Goddammit, people should not be fucking DYING from HEAT in a place that they cannot leave or where they cannot control their environment. Air conditioning in California's Central Valley should be BASIC, like food, water, and shelter. I'm not sure how this doesn't constitute at least manslaughter.

"To Build a Fire," I recall that one, too. When you're in a life-or-death situation, it makes sense! But most people aren't going to be able to sleep when full of adrenaline, anyway, so... And in any emergency where you're not in imminent danger, sleeping while you can becomes a priority anyway.

Honest Q: Sawyer's website has a comparison matrix which appears to show that none of those filters remove heavy metals, either. Is there a different method to use if that's a big concern?
