How long does it take to fashion a cloak of fungi, moss and lichen? Years, I'd say. Years! What a beauty.🌿

From my afternoon walk, looking south along this spectacular coastline. Last time I was here was just after the 2019–20 Black Summer bushfires and many of those cliffs were bald and charred. I even saw whales breaching on their annual migration north!

Small mosquito orchids (Acianthus pusillus) on the edge of Croajingolong NP, VIC. Very small flowers on these winter orchids - almost the same size as the actual mozzies in these parts ;) Out a little bit later than usual this yr in late June at this location #orchids #winter #inthefield #Australia

Have driven a couple of hours south for a solo writing retreat in my favourite location. It's chilly and damp (it IS winter!), but I'm surrounded by nature. Spotted on my first walk: a pair of little pied cormorants drying their wings. Note how beak matches lichen! 🪶

Coast banksia (B. integrifolia) alight at day's end. You can see the flower spike has 100s of flowers about to release their nectar, much loved by birds and insects, and birds that love insects.

I was asked, at great length, a question yesterday that I tried to read as other than "I get that nonbinary people want to use their pronouns of choice, but do the rest of us have to honor that?" And I couldn't. So: Yes. The rest of us do.

This is D.H. Lawrence Reserve, Thirroul, a quiet little pocket of a park high above the sea. It was on this street in 1922 that Lawrence lived and wrote the novel Kangaroo.📚
