It feels like pregnancy risk is something people forgot about because modern medicine is soo good. Similar issue to how good vaccines are at hiding how bad diseases can really be.

100%. Like, a not-insignificant part of the reason that so many old stories feature kids at conflict with step mothers is the part where 30% of mothers got taken out by having babies sooner or later. And don't name the baby until they make it through a winter or two, in case of diphtheria

It's also because the general public is unaware of risky pregnancies among poor people, who are unlikely to afford prenatal care or get it only from social or charitable services. The public conversation around pregnancy risk, when it occurs, centers middle-class white people.

Yeah, well the US isn't even in the top ten countries regarding healthy births as a percentage of births. Doesn't seem to align with the 'best healthcare system in the world' canard. Maybe they meant best healthcare system that money can buy in the world.

It's also because so little researchdollwrs and efforts go into these diseases and complications! They're not really a priority for anyone so they disappear out of the conversation.
