I think your on to something. I have a theory that "weird new food smells" is the cause of certain amount of strife when a new immigrant groups starts showing up to a neighborhood. I don't understand the exact mechanism but general unspecified discomfort does feel like a spot for bigotry to root.

I do sort of disagree with part of it. I feel the GOP was doomed to become anti lgbt as soon as gay marriage became politicized. The gop had been increasing their religous support in general and evangelical support specificly. Once it became a wedge issue I don't see how it else it could go.

The gop at that time was very much leaning into libertarian mind set. They would often say they are the "just leave me alone party". Both parties were bad on lgbt rights and weed, gop was worse but not by a huge margin.

One thing Sulzburger has helped me was to learn about other points of view and try some of their ideas out. Specifically that we should be making lists of political agents and journalists over perceived slights. I have been advised by my lawyers official policy thus not available as evidence.

It was for a seniors math class we actually did model outcomes, how voting systems change if the most loved or least hated guy gets elected, .... things like that. Also one of the conclusions is that Al Gore would have won easily without recount, so I have been hating FPTP for a long time now.

Yea a long time ago in college we looked at various voting methods and I believe that FPTP was strictly worse then most others in just every category. The only defense for it is it is easier to explain.

One of my hot takes is that first past the post should be illegal and we should require ranked choice or proportional representation or just about anything else. FPTP is probably the least democratic forms of electing representation in use today.

When I worked as a cashier at a hardware store there were a to of guys that would ask me questions about a power tool despite Tools dept always having staff. Eventually I realized that the guys didn't want to ask the girl in the dept even though she would have known more.
