Or, to put it another way, there are no pain receptors in the brain. The migraine may be the way that the brain provides feedback (that would come as pain in the rest of the body) that there is something seriously wrong that needs to be remedied with behavioral modification (say, with sleep).

I think a lot of people have found something similar with their own migraines. This study provides some mechanistic evidence for why sleeping is helping in these cases to relieve the migraine (or, more specifically, what it means about the state of the brain when the migraine happened).

New study on migraine causes: 🧪

"Migraine is actually protective in that way. The pain is protective because it’s telling the person to rest and recover and sleep," says study co-author Maiken Nedergaard, a neuroscientist at the University of Copenhagen.

Meant to tag this with 🧪 for the butterfly lovers. Pink Lady butterflies that were surprisingly found in South America (far from their West-African home) with tattered wings appear to have been blown off their normal course and forced to fly across the Atlantic until finding land.

Don't let the interview go to your head. You might be the best person they could find on short notice, or they might have targetted you because they want to advance a larger sensationalistic agenda/"hook" of the story that you might not be 100% okay with implicitly endorsing. Be humble. Be careful.

This is certainly a very interesting and worthwhile topic to discuss in such a class! That said, I hope students know that you do not need to be talking to journalists every week to be a successful scientist, and getting interviews should be a happy privilege not be a primary career goal. 🧪

So many people see this and get a moment of amusement and surprise but never think more about it: This is all of ancient history and archaeology: All of the fatty nooks and crannies lost to the decay of time until we take what remains and reimagine it as a leaner, purpose-built, brutal existence.

Four related topics that I wish undergrad and high-school stats would better prepare students for: 1. Standard deviation 2. Standard error [of the mean] 3. 95% confidence intervals 4. Central Limit Theorem These are things undergrads all think they know but come up way short when they need them.

Across the built-in ways to plot error bars in GSheets & Excel, Excel's "custom" is the only method that makes any sense for a practical use case. How is it still the case that the default way to do error bars in these programs is still broken and useless? What people use these?
