🗃️ Over on the H-France email list, the son of the late Charles Tilly is offering boxes of his dad's collection of microfilm of 17th–20th-century material from French archives.
Please someone take them so that all those years of research and archiving don't just get chucked in the bin.

58-42 preference split to Labor on my count. Liberals might improve a bit on postals by the time everything is counted but Labor has a huge advantage from preferences.
Younger voters favouring Left minor parties maybe?

What's the point of spending billions of dollars to buy nuclear submarines when the thing that terrifies Australian politicians the most is a single boatload of Pakistani asylum seekers?

Demand response at a residential level is hugely challenging to get widespread adoption. Consumers mostly just don't care that they are contributing to the possibility of blackouts, they want their poorly insulated 30 square house to be a chilly 18 degrees.

That is the most remarkable game of Test cricket I have ever watched. Shamar Joseph with an incredible individual performance to win the game for the West Indies.

American capitalism has at it's core the misguided belief that anyone can become a millionaire if they work hard enough, ignoring that success is the result of many complex factors. Survivorship bias combined with rugged individualism is the Kool-Aid of American workers.

In the long run it's more likely that AI improves to a point where most white collar knowledge based jobs are destroyed, while corresponding improvements in robotics and automation destroy blue collar jobs, leaving most people without jobs.
Not sure what happens after that.

I hear you but then I see other passengers rock up with trolley bags that are 12+ kilograms and all the overhead bin space evaporates immediately.
I'll admit packing only 7kg including laptop was a challenge!

Politicians are the ones with most to lose under UBI because most of the levers they use to manipulate voters disappear under UBI.

At the height of the pandemic, the Australian government increased income support payments significantly when middle class voters suddenly found themselves unable to pay their mortgages. Amazing what governments can do when threatened with extinction.

It doesn't help when Labor is only slightly less shit on nearly every policy that voters actually care about. Doing the absolute bare minimum is not a strategy for re-election.

The vast majority of the workforce have zero ability to influence the key policy levers that drive the economy. The RBA can keep raising rates longer than you can afford to pay your mortgage.
