Thinking a lot about this article today after three relatively junior women, including me, resigned from my department—two of us deciding to leave academia entirely—in a little over a month.

Just a reminder: because France is a semi-presidential system, the Prime Minister could be Jordan Bardella or Marine Lepen if the RN wins the majority of the vote at the next legislative election. As a result, Macron would have to "cohabitate" with the RN and manage a far-right government.

Why did Macron dissolve the parliament? More and more people argue that Macron will let the RN win in three weeks to have a "cohabitation" and show how incompetent the party is. By doing so, the RN would lose popular support and the presidential election in 3 years.

Is it going to work? Well if Jacques Chirac’d be still alive, he would remind him that such a move can blow up in his face (cf. the 1997 French election)

Why? Probably because he thinks the RN’s victory tonight will scare people and incentivize them to support him (le fameux sursaut républicain pour faire barrage à l’extrême droite)

Are you wondering how to understand the South African elections in relation to land, the economy and KwaZulu-Natal? Conveniently, I have a newly published article on land reform in KZN's sugar sector.

Some examples of academic gatekeeping: 1) telling someone their research “doesn’t count” 2) excluding adjuncts/staff from professional development or funding 3) drawing arbitrary disciplinary boundaries to exclude people 4) reinforcing faculty/staff hierarchies 5) defaulting to blind peer review

Do we use a research method because it's the most equipped to answer our research question or because it will attract funding? This fascinating piece from @tamirmoustafa.bsky.social shows how the NSF can shape the type of work we produce and what we consider to be "good" political science.

My findings have important implications. In 2016, the president of the French senate toured Western Africa to promote bicameralism and its benefits for democracy. My research shows the opposite. In hybrid regimes, bicameralism undermines the opposition and weakens the legislature as a whole.

My new piece on the resurgence of the African bicameral parliament is out! Using a mixed-method approach, I argue that incumbents introduce a second chamber when the opposition has sufficient power in the lower chamber to constrain the executive branch. @comppol.bsky.social @winls.bsky.social

Important - and unexpected - ruling from the Senegalese Constitutional Council preventing Macky Sall from delaying the presidential election.

This decision is clearly departing from the Council's handoff jurisprudence when adjudicating electoral cases.
