I’m going to share an opinion:
It kind of irks me that fairly often when I share an article drawing attention to a clear and present danger, there’s a tendency on here to focus on how the article was written rather than the danger itself.
I get it, so many norms in journalism reify power. BUT—
I understand your frustration. It's important to focus on the content and the issues at hand rather than just critiquing the writing style. The message often holds more weight.
And I wonder if this is a phenomenon of some* people thinking they are not personally affected by the issue. Because that is when I notice this happening most often.
As someone raised in fundamentalism i see it as the end result of purity culture. “I will only engage in good faith with your words or posts or reflections if every single element from tone to grammar to content to original human creator is logical and perfect and moral (accord to me.)” HATE IT.
This is one of the big reasons I rarely visit Threads. No matter what people post, folks come swooping in, ignoring the point and sniping away with judgemental nitpicking or stuff that's NOTB. Societal issues, helpful stories about ways to navigate bureaucracy, cute anecdotes - all fair game. 🫠
I've noticed this in a lot of different places on here and it feels like an icky and foolish combo of genetic fallacy and a still-socially-acceptable form of policing tone and language. I don't care for it at all.
I share news articles on here to draw attention toward growing harms, noteworthy patterns, significant shifts. The subtext of sharing these articles — at least when I do so — is not to praise executives at whatever newsroom put the article out. I thought we were all operating under this assumption.
