That's true! And it's a very fine distinction, but in-universe Starfleet does not view itself as a military. Which I'm sure is cold comfort to those who picked a fight with Starfleet and lost. But that's the fun part of Trek, I think. It's a great question to examine..😄

Which I think ties in great with your point about exploring the contradictions. Klingons are a warrior culture. Cardassians are a militaristic society. Both make war a part of their lifestyle. To humans, it's just another job. Like recalibrating a warp coil. And that is what makes us a threat.

It's not, actually. It's mission is primarily exploration and scientific discovery. Which is what makes it all the more terrifying when you realize that even though Starfleet is not first and foremost an organization dedicated to war *it is still exceedingly good at it when let off its leash.*

Do what now? As far as I know "Imperial Core" is not a particularly common term in Star Wars anything. Galactic Core, yes; that's where you'll find the Core Worlds like Coruscant, Corellia, and Chandrila, But "Imperial Core" is a new one to me. Is this some kinda new dog whistle?

The irony is that the colonies actually were pretty OK with the king; in fact, they really only recognized his authority, since he wrote the colonial charters establishing each one. It was *Parliament* they had beef with, and whom they felt was overreaching in their authority.

One of my favorite bits of paranormal ephemera is the fact that John Constantine is reported to have been seen by writers working on his titles. Once he even made eye contact with Alan Moore and is said to have nodded conspiratorially. Moore wisely did not attempt further interaction.

TNG is a little more clear on the authority the Federation, and by extension, Starfleet, has over colonies, but I would surmise that they would step in and prevent the miners from disregarding the well-being of the native Horta. Whatever analogue they have to the EPA would likely take point on that.
