Study: gender differences (likely bias) in awarding cum laude to men (vs women) Catches my eye: this award goes to "top 5%". Even small differences at mean can lead to large differences at the tails. A gender bias here could have huge impact in very competitive environments (academia, anyone?)

Vandaag waren we met het
@dejongeakademie.bsky.social bestuur op bezoek bij het college van bestuur van de universiteit van Maastricht en de young academy Maastricht. Het was een goed gesprek en heel prettige ontmoeting. Jammer dat we niet even langer in deze schitterende stad konden blijven.

New paper: of 5000 PhDs awarded at large Dutch uni, men were about twice as likely to receive a cum laude degree even if they had same supervisor. Difference most severe with all male PhD committees & reduces with more female members.

In a new article in Nature Scientific Reports I find that male PhD students are almost twice as likely than female PhD students to obtain a cum laude distinction for their dissertation. A cum laude is very rare, and only awarded to 5% of Dutch PhD students.

New science: A deep dive into occupational licensing across different countries (USA/Germany) and how it is connected to wages.
