Gardener and garden writer who takes photographs. Politically inclined, definitely leftist. Aotearoa New Zealand. π±
Daughter is a scientist. Also living in very middle class Canberra. There is no way she would endanger a child's wellbeing. The birthday repast will be thoroughly researched and free from gluten, egg, dairy and nuts. But party-ish.

Daughter is planning party for her son turning 8 and his friends' dietary details so far are no eggs, no nuts, no dairy and gluten-free. She is planning a jelly cake (because none so far are vegetarian). Not sure I would know where to start.

Also, I am now muting the Aotearoa naysayers who are declaring that Starmer is already a failure and predicting his defeat in 2029. Give him one day at least to celebrate before getting out the knives.
Every government is a disappointment in my experience. Some are more disastrous, though.

I read a piece about how incensed some Brits were at the discovery that Yorkshire tea is not actually grown in Yorkshire. They thought they were buying British.

We are clearly on the same page but you are more optimistic. I think it would a HUGE deal for this government to do anything that penalizes landlords, superannuitants of business; abused children, not so much.

Trying again, without the typos. I have yet to see any steps that are too far for this government.

I am sure that with this government, the Minister will change the rules to suit if need be.

Key was a pragmatist. Not driven by either religious or political ideology. And smart. He could and would turn on a sixpence if he saw it as advantageous to him. Ruthless and I disliked him intensely but I never doubted his competence and indeed his leadership skills.

Are we taking bets yet on whether Destiny Church and Tamaki will win the tender to run the boot camps for children and have their Man Up thugs doing the long term mentoring of these vulnerable youth? Desperate times.

The orchids, however, last for months. Our interest is solely in orchids we can use as garden plants so mostly cymbidiums, dendrobiums, calanthes and pleiones. #aonzgardening

Snowdrop season is fleeting here at best - maybe 10 days to a fortnight - but no less charming for that. We use them both as garden plants and in meadow situations. #aonzgardening

After a Dunedin childhood, year round, tree- ripened citrus is something that still thrills me. Our kids took it for granted until they left home and found what most of the population have to be satisfied with, and pay for.

We eat very seasonally here and produce a lot of our own food. Which takes a lot of time and effort but there are many worse ways to live and it is our choice. Currently packing the dried bean harvest to store.

Just as our current government makes Bolger look benign. Even Key looks a better, more capable, maybe kinder option and that is amazing.

On the one hand, he can't be worse than the Tories but that is a very low bar. Here's hoping he will rise well beyond that. Not just 14 years of damage - right back to Thatcher.

None of the seedling yellows are as good as the commercial variety so we rather lost interest but there are about 4 that showed some merit. We need to identify those again and chainsaw out the rest to manage them better.

We have 2 vines of green kiwifruit here like the one in the photo. And 2 full rows of seedling yellow ones that Mark raised years ago that we really need to sort out. Plants of the yellow can't be bought so he raised seed.

I asked our lifetime leftie London friends about Starmer because all I see here is contempt for him and I wondered how much of that was coming from UK media. They credit him with saving the Labour Party, almost singlehandedly. Hold him in high esteem.

We refer to our elderly fox terrier, Dudley, as Ol' Iron Bladder. Fortunately, the rain stopped long enough for this aquaphobic dog to go out for the longest pee known to dog or human. I have been known to take him out under an umbrella when rain is relentless.

Our dogs adore pigs ears but at $5 or more each and able to be demolished in 3 minutes flat, they are off the menu. The $19.99 deer antler piece lasts about 3 months. It rehardens between gnaws.

I think we all know that is going to happen. It is just that some people think that is what these children deserve and that it will teach them hard lessons in life (consequences) while others like us think it is the worst possible approach.

Defence staff are not psychologists, educationalists or child welfare officers. They also chose a career path that is not known for fostering empathy, patience or compassion. But we expect them to help our most challenging children?

Newshub staff should, apparently be tried and jailed. Or consigned to hellfire. Local man - who was born here and lived here for over 70 years and who seems to have lost what little plot he had since his wife died recently, should be locked up for the rest of his life.

Jeepers, Facebook can bring out the savagery and vitriol in people. Looked at comments on NZH piece on where Newshub staff are going. And also comments on local neighborhood page about local man with a lifelong history of mental illness.
