Daughter is planning party for her son turning 8 and his friends' dietary details so far are no eggs, no nuts, no dairy and gluten-free. She is planning a jelly cake (because none so far are vegetarian). Not sure I would know where to start.

Also, I am now muting the Aotearoa naysayers who are declaring that Starmer is already a failure and predicting his defeat in 2029. Give him one day at least to celebrate before getting out the knives. Every government is a disappointment in my experience. Some are more disastrous, though.

Key was a pragmatist. Not driven by either religious or political ideology. And smart. He could and would turn on a sixpence if he saw it as advantageous to him. Ruthless and I disliked him intensely but I never doubted his competence and indeed his leadership skills.

After a Dunedin childhood, year round, tree- ripened citrus is something that still thrills me. Our kids took it for granted until they left home and found what most of the population have to be satisfied with, and pay for.

We eat very seasonally here and produce a lot of our own food. Which takes a lot of time and effort but there are many worse ways to live and it is our choice. Currently packing the dried bean harvest to store.

None of the seedling yellows are as good as the commercial variety so we rather lost interest but there are about 4 that showed some merit. We need to identify those again and chainsaw out the rest to manage them better.

We have 2 vines of green kiwifruit here like the one in the photo. And 2 full rows of seedling yellow ones that Mark raised years ago that we really need to sort out. Plants of the yellow can't be bought so he raised seed.

Mandarins and kiwifruit in abundance here. Now at the trying to rehome them stage amongst friends. After a Dunedin childhood when mandarins were a tinned treat, I could not belive the trees in fruit when I first came here.

I asked our lifetime leftie London friends about Starmer because all I see here is contempt for him and I wondered how much of that was coming from UK media. They credit him with saving the Labour Party, almost singlehandedly. Hold him in high esteem.

We refer to our elderly fox terrier, Dudley, as Ol' Iron Bladder. Fortunately, the rain stopped long enough for this aquaphobic dog to go out for the longest pee known to dog or human. I have been known to take him out under an umbrella when rain is relentless.

Our dogs adore pigs ears but at $5 or more each and able to be demolished in 3 minutes flat, they are off the menu. The $19.99 deer antler piece lasts about 3 months. It rehardens between gnaws.
