This is beautiful and creative. I just got a fresh shipment of theobromine (in its whole-food form), and I better go sample it.

Consulting arborists generally have more independence (many work for themselves) than arborists working for large corporations. Big tree companies often have an incentive to recommend tree removal, which is quite profitable.

We can't make an assessment from photos. There is decay in the stem base but that tells us little about stability. One critical factor is a target - will the tree fall on a building or harm a person if it falls? You need to consult an experienced arborist with TRAQ (risk assessment) qualifications.

The recent supreme court decisions have us all thinking about rot and decay. Here is a less harmful example. Inonotus dryadeus is a white rot fungus on living oaks and many other trees. Here it is on sweetgum, fruiting on the woody base of the tree (L) and inside the hollow stem (R).

We have many miles of wood plank fences, painted black, in the Bluegrass. At this time of year, we often see this lovely basidiomycete fruiting on the top of the planks. Dacryopinax spathularia is a brown rot decay fungus. Remember, if it weren't for decay fungi, we'd be buried deep under wood.

It is also the "Birthday" of one of the most important papers in the history of science, the reading of letters and essays from Charles Darwin and Alfred Russell Wallace spelling out their theory of evolution by natural selection for the first time.

I love trains, and take them when I can. I do not, though, understand the attraction of loud, smelly, polluting steam trains. The world is in the transition from diesel to electric, and we need to accelerate that.

Dwarf mistletoe is such a lovely plant. It would make for nice bouquets in your living room, wouldn't it? Related to sandalwood, so it smells good. This is the parasitic dwarf mistletoe, Arceuthobium vaginatum, on ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa. It is, of course, a very damaging parasite.

My father was a classical musician (baritone). Going to concerts with him was a regular and very rewarding part of growing up, though he died when I was 10. I have very fond memories of seeing great orchestras and soloists like Heifetz. I’m sure your boy will long remember these events.

Growing up in Baltimore, we had the whole city at our command for the price of a bus ride, 15 cents each way. And even a trolley. My family had no car and didn’t need one.

These are dark days for those who care about our world and its inhabitants. But there is always some light, and we need to work toward it. It will take at least 20 years to repair the damage done by our courts and fossil fuel oligarchs. It will take hundreds of years to restore our climate. We will.

I have long had the impression that Bluegrass has not been warming to the extent of the rest of the country. Here is confirmation from Brian Brettschneider that we are a cool spot in long-term summer temperature records. No reason for complacency - the world is heating.

I agree entirely. As a botanist, I would never eat a fruit unless I was certain of its ID, or trusted a local person who offered it to me. In Borneo, I ate a lot of fruit that was not familiar, but I trusted my friends not to give me something toxic.
