I’ve expressed this before, but part of what I miss about my grandfather, a WWII era fella, is how so many of his stories ended with, “…and then they shot him, and that was that.” The Greatest Generation, they were a practical lot in many ways.

This is so sad. I grew up with swallows chattering on our washing line, house martins nesting in our garage and the sight and sound of swifts something taken for granted. But yes, you just don’t see nearly as many of these birds now, do you? ☹️
