I adored him on “The Good Place,” and I was even more impressed by his performance as Jason when I found out about his degree.

New York State has both a Pittsville and a Hicksville. My friend who grew up in Hicksville says he never realized it was a funny name until he went to college.

His baseball writing is good. If he’d just stuck to that, everyone would be happier.

I can only imagine what the Great Stand Mixer Wars were like! (For the record we’re a KitchenAid family, but I’ve heard Ankarsrum is the best for kneading bread.)

I have a fantasy where Iman wakes up, hears the shower running, goes and looks who’s there and it’s David, and the last 8+ years were all a horrible nightmare.

I actually think he’s pretty great. He talks like a human being and knows better than anyone how to get things done in Washington. Maybe that’s a low bar? But it’s a long way from “terrible and old” or, more accurately, terrible *because* he’s old, which is mostly the bullshit I’ve been seeing.

Which is hilarious, because a lot of us lefty Californians can barely stand him either.

I live in California, I’ve voted for Newsom every time he’s run for governor, I voted against his recall, and I can barely stand him. He’s opposed/vetoed lots of great legislation, plus he’s a big phony. Newsom for pres? There are better options.

I unfollowed them back in 2016 when they posted an unfunny “her emails” piece. I see they haven’t gotten any better.

…and that’s why I will NOT be watching the “debate” tonight. I value the remaining dregs of my sanity and creativity more than that.

So, I broke my personal rule of never doing anything called a “boot camp” this week and signed up for a webinar on “overcoming writing resistance.” It’s been great, and it gave me the courage to reopen the novel manuscript I last looked at in… 2017. What happened in 2017? Oh, right…

That is so bizarre. I can kind of understand taking the opportunity to sit quietly with your own thoughts for a few hours, but… not drinking water or going to the bathroom? Looking intimidating so people in the middle seat won’t ask you to get up? It’s like a dramatization of toxic masculinity.

62 years here, and I’ve been a cook for 50 of them — and this is the first I’ve ever heard of it! I looked it up and now I can’t wait to try making it. Sometimes you stumble onto beautiful things.

My first online communities were on AOL, so I always felt like a bit of a newcomer on Usenet. For me, though, the real Elders were the people who’d been on the WELL for years and years!

I basically agree with this. There is so much great stuff in COM, but as a reading experience, I found it… kind of boring. I adore the Luggage! And Cohen the Barbarian! But I had trouble actually finishing the book. Fortunately I started Pratchett w/ Guards!, which was great for me.

I’m old enough to remember when “kitchen computers” with expensive, dedicated recipe management software were going to be the next big thing. I don’t think anyone who cooked ever took that seriously for more than a minute, and people who didn’t cook certainly weren’t going to spend thousands on it.

Those places are useful for big groups. The marching band from my kids’ high school was in the parade about 10 years ago, and all their scheduled meals were at places like Olive Garden or Applebees. The locally owned corner diner can’t feed 50 teens at once.

Everything is bad but also in the past seven days: ✅ Donald Trump became a convicted felon ✅ Steve Bannon had his bail revoked and must go to jail ✅Alex Jones was forced to liquidate his assets to pay Sandy Hook families. We’re on a little bit of a heater so let’s enjoy it for once.

Temperature changes make the piano go out of tune faster, although that’s only one factor. My spouse has been scolded for having his against an exterior wall, but that’s where the very large piano fits in our moderate size house, so.

Ok, the reason for the long matches is of the many things I’ve always wondered about with cricket. Do you know of any “Cricket for Idiots”-type resources that explain the game as if you’ve just learned what a ball is? I’m cricket-curious.

Omg, I have a copy of this print on my wall — I’m looking at it right now! We bought it years ago at an antique store, beautifully framed, so we’ve never checked to see if it’s an original. I’m so excited to know who the artist is. Thank you!
