I would like my party to have some shameless hacks. It's not wrong to have a vision and goals for the party, but shameless hacks are important too.

"We can't run stories about Trump being a fascist rapist, it's not news."
"Why isn't it news?"
"Well look at all the stories about Biden being old, clearly that's what people are interested in."

This is true though. Every day Biden will be a new age that is older than any age he was previously, so reporting on his age will always be breaking news.

This is exactly why I block and move on. I can have way too much fun being an asshole to someone on the Internet, and I've decided I don't like what it does to me.

We could've had Trump appealing a prison sentence during the RNC. Would've been an absolutely incredible round of headlines for Dems.

"Biden said a generic platitude, clearly this is evidence he is senile"
do these people hear themselves?
what do they want him to say instead? he's clearly not dropping out, and I think "Kamala can't win it" would also make them mad

His old house had no neighbors you could see, and then he moved farther out a couple years ago.
(Though you can still hear fireworks from the neighbors on the Fourth)

My understanding (also Mass) was always that you could go up to New Hampshire and get pretty much whatever you wanted, but I never knew anyone who did.
I like fireworks, but we always flew out and did them at my Uncle's place in the boonies.

if it helps I grew up on the east coast and don't remember much by way of fireworks in my neighborhood (though many years we went to Kansas to do our own)

the breadth of misinformation is unreal. a woman next to us at dinner said she went to cuba when “trump opened the border” and her date said “best president ever.” obama did that!!! trump reversed it!!!

Don't forget that Trump wants a 10% tarif on all imports. If you have any concerns about inflation, that would turbocharge it.

It's fun that Trump can just say "idk what Project 2025 is" but Biden has to jump through ever hoop a media figure asks about wrt his age.

I think you could write the hell out of a fantasy series that was basically The Thirty Years War, but with Elves.

In general I think the early modern period has a bunch of under-explored fantasy dynamics. The Reformation or the transition to absolute monarchies are interesting dynamics to use in a fantasy setting. Or the emergence of large armies.

And it's not just about Trump's base. Trump will get some swing voters or non-Trump Republicans. They should be reachable by this stuff even if hard core MAGAs aren't.

I never understood that attitude. If America is worthless, what's the point of fighting the people who want to destroy it?

worth noting to the degree that there are ambiguities or limitations, they will be resolved by the same court that issued the ruling. do you trust them to say "no, not an official act" if Trump orders the military to shoot protestors?

Exactly. And he's benefitting a lot from always being kinda rambly. If you put even 2016 Trump side-by-side with 2024 Trump, the decline is obvious. But without that you can convince yourself he's the same as ever.

Explaining that Trump is old would require journalists to actually *do journalism*.
You can explain Biden is old with some videos and gossip from anonymous sources.
So naturally the NYT is all in on "Biden Old".

Biden v Trump is a pretty direct ageism thing. Trump is aging worse than Biden, but due to vanity and aging in different ways Trump codes as less old and therefore gets way less shit for it.

Watching it I was kinda bummed the trailers went so hard with the "the girl is a vampire" angle, because in the movie it's played as a reveal. I think going in cold would've been even better.

America is a country that occupies the land of my nation and which shouldn't have existed in the first place, but I'm still proud to be a member of a country founded on the ideal, no matter how hypocritical it's been in practice, that no man is above another. That is an ideal worth fighting for.

I would like less "what do the polls say" coverage and more "what do the candidates want to do" coverage.
For a public that hated inflation, Trump calling for universal 10% tarrifs should be the biggest story in the world.

Also: I think it is entirely fair to point out that the media is unfair to Dems. The GOP did that for years, and now the media won't report on their guy being a child rapist. If the refs don't want to be worked, they shouldn't reward it!

it's a failure of the media that they did, but there absolutely were people in 2016 who saw Trump as the less extreme option than Hillary

Incidentally I think the fact that the last two Dem primaries ended with all the most engaged partisans hating each other over factional differences is a non-trivial (though not primary) reason why Biden didn't step aside and allow an open primary.
