NYC transportation engineer for social, economic, & environmental justice (he/him)
NYC introduced a protected bike lane on 6th Ave in the β80s, but then Koch ripped it out weeks after installation. It pains me to think how advanced our streets couldβve been had innovation not been stymied for 25 years until the JSK era.

βVehicular cyclingβ is a good example of how power works. It doesnβt matter that it was a junk theory. But it was a convenient pretense for governments to serve only automobile interests.

[NYT reporter said] βthe Times is not a crusading paperβ
Punchline on p.982
The Times did not do another story on Manhattantown and the Title I program, but that might have been expected: the Times was not a paper of inquiry, and inquiry wouldβve been necessary for follow-up stories.

Reading the last section of the Power Broker now, and I love how hard Caro rags on the NY Times. Just a reminder of how long theyβve been a rotten institution.

I care about that too, which is why it is a good thing the military canβt reach its recruitment targets. As deadly as they are with fewer soldiers, they will be that much deadlier with more. Scaling back all US military intervention is of course important, but has nothing to do with the draft.

As destructive and pointless as the US's Mid-East adventurism was, there were an order-of-magnitude fewer soldiers on the ground per year than Vietnam. Maybe the lesson is that the US can now kill "more efficiently" and don't necessarily need the same numbers on the ground.

Would we have been able to even start that war, let alone remain involved so long, without the draft?

It was never a good look that Hochul sold out millions of New Yorkers because a few diner owners complained about congestion pricing, but now it looks like she might have been lying about that. Whatever the truth, she's cooked.

Iβm reviewing a traffic count from a random block in Midtown Manhattan and in the busiest hour, 85% of people were walking or biking. I think many people simply donβt understand what a minuscule role driving has on the average NYer, except for the massive pain they cause to everyone around them.

The Resistance Museum (Verzetmuseum) was really good. Also liked Brouwerij, a brewery with a windmill. But really just walking (or better, biking) around is great.

No fascist Israeli government is going to define antisemtism for me. And no fascist American government is going to define antisemtism for me. Nothing represents the essence of Judaism better than opposing fascism in Israel and the US.

As one Jew speaking only for myself: opposing genocide, opposing zionism, and opposing Israel are in no way antisemitic. On the other hand, conflating genocide, zionism, and Israel with Judaism absolutely is antisemitic. Hope this helps.

Of course the legislature is setting these protections up to fail. Basing eligibility on non-public information then putting the burden of proof on the tenant is transparently bad faith. A much simpler law would be much fairer and more effective.

Why on earth would China care who you are? And even if they did, what would they possibly do with that information? The US has much more incentive and capacity to harm people in the US than any foreign country.
